Andrew Vanwyngarden – one half of elfin superstars MGMT – has promised the band will be in much better form at Splendour than they were on their last visit. Despite deafening pre-tour buzz, those shows in December received decidedly mixed reviews. The most disappointing for fans was a limp headline set at the Meredith Music Festival in Victoria. Speaking with Your Gigs this week, Vanwyngarden admitted it was a bit of a shambles.
“That was really a shame ‘cause it was our last show of the year,” he told the website. “It was rainy and we really wanted to do an amazing, great finale, but we had all these stage and sound problems…I guess shit happens.”
Vanwyngarden sincerely hopes shit won’t happen again at Belongil Fields in July. As previously announced, MGMT will only be playing Splendour In The Grass on this trip, so it’s important to get it right.
“I’m really excited to play our new show in Australia ‘cause I think it’s gonna be very different and a lot tighter. When we went to Australia last year it was at the end of about 15 months of touring. We were really worn out and we could see the finish line. This time we’re a lot more refreshed and it’ll be much more enjoyable.”
