With their latest effort Evisceration Plague getting rabid reviews, the almighty Cannibal Corpse are heading to our shores this September.

After over 20 years of gore, these death metal pioneers are still finding new ways to shock and disgust censors. Who could forget the scene in the documentary Metal: A Headbanger’s Journey where the academic, confronted with the cover artwork of The Wretched Spawn, goes pale as she states that disturbing imagery in metal music was “far worse than I had imagined”?

After having their records banned from sale in this country between 1996 and 2006, no doubt The ‘Corpse have a special place in their hearts for Australia. Tickets go on sale from Thursday May 7th.

I don't get death metal, grindcore, progressive death metal, mathcore, metalcore, sludge metal, doom metal or any other of the ridiculous subgenres in metal music.

Erik the Black will hate me for this, but hasn't metal been done to death already? Everyone now is basically a cover band.

Every song sounded the same. Every film clip was almost identical. They may as well have all been Black Sabbath cover bands.

I just don't get it.

There's a lot of crap out there, sure. But it's definitely a scratch-below-the-surface kind of thing; there's a lot of fantastic metal out there that isn't the usual Tony Iommi-aping stuff.

Check out Enslaved from Norway. Their latest Vertebrae was one of the best albums of 2008.

Thats, like, you're opinion, Man. I could say I would probably hate whatever you like but I like a lot of varied music and don't exclude whole genres.

I got my ticket this morning. I can't wait to be in the presence of Extreme Metal royalty once again.

I was just saying to my lady yesterday I remember how they come on stage and everyone is going insane but they just keep their back to the crowd and they are fiddling around getting ready. Then the blast roars over the crowd and Cannibal Corpse turns as one to deliver the brutality to all who dare to stand fast!!!!!

I guess the bit I don't get is the lyrics. I know the music is generally dark and suits something at least somewhat morbid, but what's the deal with all the blood and core? I'm also rarely a fan of screamo vocals.

I certainly don't mind the metal sound, but I just don't get the gory subject matter.

See, there is your first mistake. I'm going to get howled down for this, but honestly, most Australian metal bands either suck or sound generic. It's true that metal is an extremely crowded genre, and that means you have to do something truly extraordinary and original in order to stand out. I'm yet to see an Aussie metal band that actually does this.

The second problem you've got is that you're listening to rage. The really unique stuff doesn't get on rage, because rage is tailored towards a generic, mainstream market. Metal heads make up only a very small section of the demographic. The metal you saw on rage would have been on there not because it was excellent metal, but because it was local. Rage really doesn't have any interest in playing obscure overseas bands, no matter how good they might be.

Eric, what do you think of Cynic? They're a pretty divisive band amongst metal fans, but I would honestly recommend Traced in Air to followers of any kind of music.

I've got a Lord CD, there's a few good songs, but I wouldn't say they were stand out. Mortal Sin sound good, but I was really put off by the xenophobic bogan thing they have going. Not that it would worry a true black metal fan - they seem to be really big on the whole vilifying ethnic minorities thing.

I would have to hear their early Death Metal work and actually listen to their albums more. Based on the two Myspace songs I heard I wouldn't write them off.

I have heard the name but just never came across their works. In the prog world it can be hit and miss for mine.

Meh, Canibal Corpse are nothing special. There are MUCH better death metal bands that aren't fronted by a fat world of warcraft playing tard that sings about having sex with dead men. I'm sure you guys'll love the gig though, it'll certainly be brutal.

Oh and Braveheart, TBH I can't stand a lot of death metal either (even though nearly all of my top bands are death metal bands) because most of it is written by bands like Cannibal Corpse. But bands like Opeth, Meshuggah, Whitechapel, Veil of Maya, Arsis, Psycroptic, All Shall Perish, these are bands that stand out in the genre, and their lyrics aren't ridiculous shit like Putridity or CC. Death metal now is like thrash was when it surfaced, flooded with crap. Macanleister, there are many good *unique* Australian metal bands such as Ne Obliviscaris, Be'lakor, Oroborus, Psycroptic, Templestowe etc, then there are tons of other good bands that aren't necessarily unique but are damn good at what they do (Mortal Sin, Red Shore etc)

i listened to a lot of metal in the old days... and CC were always shit. Brutal, but shit. I never got the gore lyricism like them and the early carcass stuff. I was always more into bolt thrower, gorefest, early deicide etc etc. But as far as the aussie guys, armoured angerl, alchemist and misery were kings back then. And by back then im talking 94ish

Oops, I didn't proof read my paragraph :S regardless, Whitechapel are a great deathcore band, regardless of how much they look like tools and the kind of crowd they attract, their music is still brutal.

In a thread about Cannibal Corpse which is mostly full of people spouting about how they don't like them and don't really like Metal it is somehow turned around that I am hassling people about their taste.

I will have to check out what the NZ fans thought of the tour so far in a place where people actually appreciate good Metal.

I caught Cannibal Corpse at The Arena last time they were here, and their sound just didn't do it for me. Not enough rhythm/chug to latch onto and get you headbanging. Not enough counter-melody/riffage to pique the ear.

And I found - in retrospect - that the lyrical undercurrent seemed a bit misogynistic. Hey, maybe it was satire, but all-in-all not my cup of tea.

There's a swag of metal acts touring soon, and I'd rather put my money to seeing Kreator or Amon Amarth or maybe Lamb of God again (definitely Slayer) ... I'll be leaving CC alone.

No. In fact, it's probably fair to say I'd never heard a CC song before I saw them at the Arena. I see bands on a whim occasionally. Sometimes it works out; this time it didn't.

Lamb of God was another on-a-whim act that I checked out a few years ago and *loved*.

Probably going to play the same experiment with Amon Amarth. We'll see how that works out.

Really, there's no better way to find out how good a band is, and how much you'll like them, than to see them live.

For sure. For some reason CC just struck a nerve for me.

See, I reckon Slayer create better tunes where lyrics become completely subsumed into the greater sonic patchwork. (I'm sure this could be argued to death one way or the other) Most of the time I have no idea what the fuck Tom Araya is singing, and mostly I don't care. It -- the mesh of guitar, bass, drums and vox -- just *sounds* awesome.

That being said, Dead Skin Mask is one freaky tune.

In fact, it's probably a bit of an indictment against CC that I *was* paying attention to the lyrics.

I went to see Lamb Of God just to check the hype but I was disappointed.

I missed Amon Amarth last time and since then have heard their music. I have heard a lot of talk about them but I can't get into them. I intend to see them live anyway.

I spent the whole show in Sydney on the barrier in front of Alex!!! Amazing bass clarity coming from his rig. I was in heaven.

I got the setlist too. As follows except George got mixed up in the middle so not the exact order towards the end.

Dude! - Alex Webster is one of the greatest metal bassists or for that matter, bassists in general that has ever lived!

AMAZING finger style - lightening fast! - and so crisp and clear - one of the best bass tones in metal!

Also Alex actually writes most of the songs/riffs - this is SO refreshing for Death metal

( a world which is dominated by guitarists and double kicking drummers! )

I thought so. I have a bass and I play it but I wouldn't say I am a bass palyer.

I saw them both times on the last tour. Rob Barrett is an amazing player too. I know Pat is the real musician among them but Rob is so solid. I took a video of his solo from "Shatter Their Bones" at the Sydney show and it is fuckng fantactic. Sounds great too because I was right in from of his rig.

Have you have seen the doco, Centuries Of Torment?
Anyone who doubts the quality of the band or the amazing scene they grew out of needs to watch it.

I know the young ones and MAB quite enjoyed Black Asylum but, as he said in the review, an indication of their general appeal was that even more people hit the bar. At least Ourbouros is in the same ballpark as Cannibal Corpse.

So many other bands could have filled that support slot better and entertained the majority of the older crowd instead of increasing bar sales as BA did.
