Begin the Splendourspeculation!

Each year, eager Splendour In The Grass devotees look to the line-ups of two leading Japanese festivals for clues on who’ll be making the Byron Bay pilgrimage. Those festivals are of course Fuji Rock and Summer Sonic – and both have now announced their first round of acts. It must be said that in 2008 there wasn’t as much crossover as other years – with only a handful of bands doing the Japan/Australia double. But what’s wrong with a little speculation, eh?

Summer Sonic has reeled in some big (if not entirely Splendour appropriate) headliners for its 10th anniversary bash on the weekend of 7-9 August. Beyond the top-billing trio of Nine Inch Nails, Linkin Park and My Chemical Romance are some names that raise our pulse: The Flaming Lips, The Specials, Sonic Youth, Klaxons, Placebo, Soulwax and Aphex Twin. A return journey from Mogwai (so devastating on their current tour) and Future Music Festival drawcards CSS seems unlikely so soon – but stranger things have happened.

As for Fuji Rock, which happens on the other side of Splendour at the Naeba Ski Resort, it’s another dream-list. How would Animal Collective, Diplo, Patti Smith, Royksopp and Weezer (!!!) suit you? Check out the full line-ups for both below and begin your idle guesswork…

FUJI ROCK LINE-UP

The Aggrolites / Animal Collective / Bad Brains / Basement Jaxx / Ben Harper & Relentless 7 / The Bloody Beetroots / Comeback My Daughters / Crookers / Diplo / Easy Star All Stars / Fake Blood / Fall Out Boy / Franz Ferdinand / Funky Meters / Gang Gang Dance / The Gaslight Anthem / Gong / Hayley Sales / The Higher / The Japanese Popstars / Jeff Lang / Justin Nozuka / Longwave / M83 / Melvins / Patti Smith / Polysics / Rowland Howard / Royksopp / Simian Mobile Disco / System 7 / Twisted Wheel / The Virgins / Weezer

SUMMER SONIC LINE-UP

Linkin Park / My Chemical Romance / Nine Inch Nails / The Specials / The Flaming Lips / Aphex Twin / CSS / The Enemy / Klaxons / Mogwai / Paramore / Placebo / Sonic Youth / Soulwax / Teenage Fanclub / Boys Like Girls / Cancer Bats / Datarock / Enter Shikari / Ghostland Observatory / Girl Talk / Hollywood Undead / Kid Sister / Kyte / Lady Gaga / Lenka / Little Boots / Mando Diao / Matisyahu / Metronomy / Mew / Mercury Rev / Mutemath / N.A.S.A / Red Light Company / Saosin / The Vaselines / VV Brown / Yuksek

Hahaa, very daft.
He is talking about Weezer being "smaller" in the context of starting out as a band, not the actual size of Bloc Party as children.

I knew that. What I was saying was the Bloc Party dude was much younger so it would've been 10 years ago or something. So back then, Weezer would have been 'smaller'.

Get it?

I know that Kele is pretty much the exact same age as me except he is a few days older. Buddy Holly was my window to Weezer so I can only assume that Kele would have been on board at the same time. I was too young to go to gigs by myself at that point and I may have cried if I got snobbed by Weezer too.

Braveheart81

Braveheart81 said on the 15th Mar, 2009

They have said that the festival is moving this year although I still think they are trying to get council approval.

There is a fair bit of local pressure against them moving the festival as it will be majorly disruptive to a couple of small towns north of Byron as well as other reasons. The new festival site would also increase the size of the festival by 10,000 or more people I believe. A massive increase.

The bonus of the new site is definitely the availability of more camping space, however it would be heaps worse for people wanting to stay in Byron.

the court case wrapped up back in ln late Feb, the judge said he was going to take a few weeks to think about his decision... they're cutting it pretty fine cos they usually announce around mid-late march the date. Does anyone know if they would still be able to use belongil?

I think the new site they have only increased the number of total tickets by about 5,000 but there will be a whole lot more camping spots.

I suppose we will find out all in the next few weeks irrespective of a lineup

Back on Splendour...
My Ideal headliner would have been Depeche Mode, granted that is impossible now.
While I could have I would have tried to secure an elite act like Blur, Peter Gabriel, Fleetwood Mac, Springsteen and filled it out with whatever else Foals, Ra Ra Riot etc

As for Springsteen, get real. Of course it's an overdue tour, but when he does come it's going to be nothing smaller than stadiums.

The most recent stuff I could find was from the Ghost of Tom Joad world tour.

dkos

dkos said on the 30th Mar, 2009

That's not the point MAB, it would be silly for a festival promoter to pick a lineup based entirely upon the "general gist" if they did we would see Tool/Rage Against The Machine at BDO every year, there wouldn't be space for acts like Neil Young and Bjork. Last year DEVO and Wolfmother played at Splendour (and closed out the nights respectively), surely they don't fit in with your "general gist" of a Splendour band.

Napoleon Solo

Do you even read other people's posts MAB? or are they only fuel for the production line of shit that is your mouth?
When did I say that they were my picks for 2009 Splendour? You asked who I would get so I gave you my opinion. I clearly stated that they won't be appearing this year. Answer my question how are any of my selections for a headliner any different to Brian Wilson?
