FasterLouder favourites Violent Soho put out one of the best albums of 2008 with their debut long player We Don’t Belong Here.

Now it seems like international success might be just around the corner, with the band signing with US label Ecstatic Peace! – which just happens to be the label founded by Sonic Youth frontman Thurston Moore.

Word is that a newly recorded album – based on We Don’t Belong Here – will be due in the third quarter of ‘09 for worldwide release.

just out of curiosity to Violent Soho fans. why like them but hate on the vines? this is a genuine question btw, not provoking shiiiiat.
i personally like some vines stuff and VS. dont see why some people like the latter and dog the prior, though.

i like the vines, but i LOOOOVE violent soho, i guess i like the fact that violent soho commit wholeheartedly to the whole grunge thing, while with nicholls it feels a little put-on? like he'll stand perfectly still for the whole set, and then smash his guitar at the end of the last song, which feels a little contrived... plus nicholls mixes it up with slower poppier numbers that dont really suit his voice. (ie he cant sing)

it's a good question - i had a similar question once, to all the people who wrote off Jet as sounding too much like their influences, but then heralded Wolfmother as the next coming of jesus.

I didnt mind the vines to start with, I went off them after seeing them be shite live a few times though. I concur with Gumbouy, Nicholls just doesnt do it for me. I also love that VS get right into their thing and dont try and be something they're not. When they thanked the very small crowd at Falls for going to see Fall's least popular act I kinda got the impression that they didnt give a fuck about it...where-as I could see Nicholls in the same situation spitting it and really doing a sub-par performance. Thats probably another thing, every time Ive seen VS they have really given a damn good performance...the same cannot ever be said for the Vines!!

One of the first times I met the Violent Soho guys, they thanked me for (earlier) writing that they were in the vein of Nirvana etc. I asked if they minded that I said their influences were obvious, and they said no, not at all, thats what they were, why try and pretend otherwise?

VS are more human.

When I saw them in Canberra in this tiny bar, they were before Cut Off Your Hands, so all the hipsters were about, and then COYH pulled out at the last minute, so they were playing to a now angry crowd that wasn't their scene, and I think it only helped them.

I bought a t-shirt, and the guitarist was a fucking cool dude and really thankful for my $20-odd, which is rare these days.

I can only second what gumboy has said.

Soho unashamedly wear their influences on their sleeve (and continue to do so) without pushing the notion of ever having reinvented the wheel, something that I always felt The Vines/accompanying media/publicity circus seemed to portray.
This would be fine but for the fact that they failed so dismally in living up to the 'hype' for whatever reason.

Violent Soho went on to become the band that The Vines had earlier promised to be and more power to them.
