So successful was Death Cab For Cutie’s last visit in August 2008, the band is making a hasty return this February. In recent weeks the music press has been fawning over the news that frontman Ben Gibbard is marrying actress Zooey Deschanel, but there’s been plenty more happening in the world of Death Cab.

Most notably, the American seranaders accompanied Neil Young and Wilco on a dream circuit of America late last year. It was also the tour that saw Gibbard have a close encounter with a scorpion, but that’s another story. If you swooned at their last outing down under, expect the same again in 2009.

Death Cab For Cutie pulls in to the following venues in February. Tickets on sale Friday 9 January.

Thursday 19 – Fremantle Arts Centre, Fremantle [18+]
Sunday 22 – Thebarton Theatre, Adelaide [Licensed And All Ages]
Monday 23 – Forum Theatre, Melbourne [18+]
Tuesday 24 – Forum Theatre, Melbourne [18+]
Thursday 26 – Enmore Theatre, Sydney [Licensed/All Ages]
Saturday 28 – The Tivoli, Brisbane [18+]

just for everyones fyi DCFC recently rereleased their first album, Something About Airplanes, with a bonus disc of a recording of one of their first ever shows in Seattle.

Just a sidenote, though: Airplanes is actually the second album released under the name Death Cab for Cutie.
The first was called You Can Play These Songs With Chords, originally released in 1997 where Ben played all the instruments.

i don't think they're the best live act (that said, i've seen them in Australia 6 already!) but they always make an effort to really canvas most of their back catalogue, which is one of the things that makes me keep coming back to their gigs.

still, touring already.. i haven't even had a chance to miss them yet :P

I like the fact how no two sets are ever the same for them. Sure, they'll always start with the first track off the album they're supporting and finish with Transatlanticism. But it's the inbetween that is the sweetest plum; eg: getting both Company Calls AND its Epilogue, even though not many people knew it.

Having seen them four times already, I dunno if I want to fork out for another. A return so soon might mean fewer casual fans that only want the Plans stuff and that's a nod in favour... Would love if they played Information Travels Faster. That would probably guarantee my presence.

Ben used to perform that solo a lot at DCFC shows.
At the MySpace secret show back in August, it was played full-band and sounded great.

They opened that with Champagne from a Paper Cup, and I was flabbergasted.
Wish they'd reach back to more obscurities like that every now and then at actual shows.

I was just messing around on the ticketek website and clicked on the cat empire's ticketing page and was shocked to find that they're playing at the Enmore for $60 a ticket! I guess if you're stupid enough to like that music then you deserve to pay that much.

Not that I really like that style of music, but if you do, Blue King Brown is 100x better.

its not about numbers of members of the band, its about the level of enjoyment. id pay the same amount for a Something For Kate show as I would a Paul Dempsey solo show, since id get guaranteed enjoyment out of both.
