An already bursting-at-the-seams Big Day Out bill has now filled out even further. The star of the third round announcement is undoubtedly Mike Patton’s unhinged four-piece Fantomas. Brisbane juggernaut The Butterfly Effect will get the moshpits moving, while blues revisionist Son Of Dave stirs up the Lilyworld.

Then there’s Barrence Whitfield and the Rockwiz Orkestra (they of SBS TV fame), Regurgitator frontman Quan doing his solo thing and dancefloor staple T-Rek in the Boiler Room. Melbourne and Sydney will also be treated to a set by our very own – Ĺ“80s alt-pop sensations The Reels.

Couldn't agree more.

People need to remember Australia isn't the UK or the US. International bands have to travel a long way to get here, incurring significant expenses in the process.

In the UK\US it might be common for festivals to have a large number of big international headliners on the same lineup, but that is purely not feasible in Australia. In addition to their close proximity to the artist's homes, the festivals there also have much larger capacities and therefore, much larger budgets.
In order to get the same sorts of lineups here, ticket prices would surely have to increase - even more than they already have. At which point, forums would just be littered with complaints about ticket prices, instead of lineups.

I think the Big Day Out festival is one of the best in Australia for continually providing an interesting lineup that appeals to a wide range of people. Despite what some of may claim, they always provide atleast a few big headliners. Considering the size of the BDO tour and the resources they have at their disposal, I think you can safely say that they book the best lineup they possibly can. That's not to say the lineup every year is the "best festival lineup ever" or anything, but they would definately get the best acts who are touring at that time (late January). Bands follow strict touring schedules, they can only work with whats on offer. (For example, before the lineup was released many people wanted Radiohead to play - if Radiohead had any intention of coming to Australia in January I am sure the BDO organisers would have made every attempt to book them.)
