Adelaide band, The Shiny Brights are currently showcasing at the CMJ festival in New York.

In part 3 of a 5 part blog, the band report in on their latest adventures.

Lest we forget the previous two days of foolishness that was the beginning of the CMJ Music and Film Marathon and begin to understand the true capabilities of such an event to establish and showcase your band. Duets with the naked cowboy aside, the pure talent CMJ is showcasing this year is unbelievable and as one of only 15 or so Australian bands it has allowed us to network and learn to network.

Networking is not only something John West does on a regular basis but also it is the vital instrument of the showcase. The questions are when is appropriate, who do you approach and how do you get them to take interest in you. Picking the proper talent is much like choosing a mail order bride from a catalogue, you can search all you like, check their credentials, but you never know what you’re going to get till you are together face to face.

Thursday is one of the finest nights of the 2008 CMJ Music Fest, with bands such as White Lies, Donavon Frankenreiter and hot new UK act Crystal Castles. However, one underground secret of CMJ they don’t tell you about, when you pay over 300 dollars for a badge, is that a badge does not guarantee you entry to every show. Never fear though as this one small slip, threw us towards the other side of the festival that incorporates film. After two hours of smut and a Q&A with Clerks mastermind Kevin Smith we had soon replaced the misery of missing Crystal Castles at the famous Webster Hall with a few less brain cells. After all tomorrow is our showcase, and not many people walked away from a showing of Alice Glass and Ethan Kath without a severe hangover or a missing limb. Till tomorrow!
