The Who are coming toAustralia

The whispers began on the weekend, but now FasterLouder can confirm The Who are definitely coming down under in 2009 to play the Grand Prix in Melbourne. And you can sure there are more shows to follow.

Spearheaded by Roger Daltrey and Peter Townshend, the iconic British band hasn’t slowed its momentum in recent years. The Who floored the Pyramid Stage on the last day of Glastonbury 2007, with the BBC enthusing, “Daltry and Townshend’s energy and panache still make their (40 years younger) rivals seem tame in comparison.” The praise was echoed by almost all the comments on the Glastonbury site.

It’s a huge win for the 2009 Australian Grand Prix, then, that The Who will perform the closing concert of the Formula One world championship. Last year’s star attraction was KISS, with an estimated 65,000 people witnessing the spectacle. Townsend is “hoping to see an even bigger crowd” – and we get the feeling he’ll get his wish. This could be one of 2009’s defining performances.

The 2009 FORMULA 1â„¢ ING Australian Grand Prix happens at Albert Park, Melbourne, from 26 – 29 March. Stay tuned to FasterLouder for The Who’s national dates when they come to hand.

THE WHO

British rock legends THE WHO are coming to Australia to FIRE UP the 2009 FORMULA 1™ ING Australian Grand Prix. Andrew McManus presents one of the greatest ever live rock bands who will bring the curtain down on what is shaping up to be the biggest Grand Prix in Australia’s history. Special guests are Melbourne's Dallas Crane. Tickets for this EXPLOSIVE night are on sale Monday 3rd November.

With hits including ‘Who Are You’, ‘Substitute’, ‘My Generation’, ‘Pinball Wizard’ and ‘You Better You Bet’, The Who was the soundtrack for a generation. Next year they will provide the soundtrack to the Australian Grand Prix.

Performing in their only Melbourne show, The Who will take next year’s GP to a whole new level with a spectacular concert to herald the conclusion of the opening round of the Formula One world championship. Melbounre band Dalls Crane will kick off the evening for them.

The Who is one of the most influential groups in rock music. Their progressive approach to the writing of albums and their exciting live shows are matched by few. The hard rock style they brought to England's music scene was one that set the stage for other bands ranging from Led Zeppelin to The Clash. The Who has sold over 100 million albums and won every major award including Grammies, Brit Awards and Lifetime Achievement honours.

The Who has been inducted into both the US and UK Rock ’N Roll Hall of Fame. All three versions of the American forensic drama CSI (CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, CSI: Miami, and CSI: NY) feature songs written and performed by The Who as their theme songs – “Who Are You”, “Won't Get Fooled Again” and “Baba O'Riley” respectively.

Roger Daltrey and Pete Townshend, are the last two surviving members of the original foursome. The band is rounded out by long-time members Simon Townshend (guitar), Zak Starkey (drums), Pino Palladino (bass) and John ‘Rabbit’ Bundrick (keys). “This is a special occasion for us to come and be with you guys at the time of the Grand Prix,” said Townsend. “KISS did it last year and we hear they played to big crowds, but we hope to see an even bigger crowd when we hit Melbourne in March.” “We can’t wait to get there,” added Daltrey, “we hope a load of you turn out to see us. It’s a bloody long way to go, but you’re worth coming to.”
