The Who are coming toAustralia
Wed 29th Oct, 2008 in Local News
The whispers began on the weekend, but now FasterLouder can confirm The Who are definitely coming down under in 2009 to play the Grand Prix in Melbourne. And you can sure there are more shows to follow.
Spearheaded by Roger Daltrey and Peter Townshend, the iconic British band hasn’t slowed its momentum in recent years. The Who floored the Pyramid Stage on the last day of Glastonbury 2007, with the BBC enthusing, “Daltry and Townshend’s energy and panache still make their (40 years younger) rivals seem tame in comparison.” The praise was echoed by almost all the comments on the Glastonbury site.
It’s a huge win for the 2009 Australian Grand Prix, then, that The Who will perform the closing concert of the Formula One world championship. Last year’s star attraction was KISS, with an estimated 65,000 people witnessing the spectacle. Townsend is “hoping to see an even bigger crowd” – and we get the feeling he’ll get his wish. This could be one of 2009’s defining performances.
The 2009 FORMULA 1â„¢ ING Australian Grand Prix happens at Albert Park, Melbourne, from 26 – 29 March. Stay tuned to FasterLouder for The Who’s national dates when they come to hand.
