Hold your breath people – for the first time in twenty four years, the fabled songwriter, poet, novelist and living legend, Leonard Cohen, is coming to Australia.

Despite being told by music critic Jon Landau in the early 1970’s “I have seen the future of rock’n’roll, and it is not Leonard Cohen” , Cohen has gone on to influence everyone from Dylan to Cave throughout his career and last year was inducted into the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame. At the time his inductee, Lou Reed, summed up Cohen’s contribution to music by simply asserting “We’re so lucky to be alive at the same time Leonard Cohen is”.

Since releasing The Songs of Leoard Cohen in 1967, he has produced another eleven alums, numerous artworks and books of poetry. He is the writer’s writer, whose approach to his craft was ironically mundane in its essence : “If it is your destiny to be this labourer called a writer, then you know that you’ve got to go to work every day. But you also know that you’re not gonna get it every day. You have to be prepared, but you really don’t command the enterprise”.

The icing on the cake? Australia’s own master of story-telling, Paul Kelly, will be supporting. You would be ill of mind to miss these shows.

I'm in two minds. Definitely incredible sound. The whole band (10 onstage) were the finest Cohen could have found anywhere, theyv'e worked with everyone from The Verve through to Linda Ronstadt, through to Ray Charles and billions more.

I couldn't get past how scripted and insincere the whole show was. I guess its been a while since I've been to a show where myself at 24 is the youngest in attendance, but the 5 encores, the 8 standing ovations, taking 5 minutes out of 3 separate occasions to thank the band and introduce them (using the same words twice over)

There isn't a doubt his voice stood up extremely well; it could have done with a little less harpsicord organ, electric clarinet, and I think the backing singers took a little too much limelight (I'm well aware the input of Sharon Robinson) I'd have liked to hear Cohens voice on its own a bit more.

Still, can't complain about over 3 hours of Cohen!

Dex, I think you are being a bit harsh.
The show was superb because of the input of the band and the backing singers. He knows that he can't carry it any more on his own.
He doesn't have the voice to carry some of his songs, he is 75.
"If it be your will" would probably have been left off the list otherwise.

To be fair I did think there were too many standing ovations, but he was being a bit of a tease pretending to leave so many times, people just got carried away.

I am seeing him again on Saturday at Day on the green.
Looking forward to it, and a longer set from PK.
