Franz Ferdinand do sideshows

Lined up to bring in the New Year at Falls Festival, well-heeled Glaswegians Franz Ferdinand will also do two sideshows alongside the Cribs.

The band-that’s-made-for-dancing is releasing its next album, Tonight: Franz Ferdinand, in 2009, so expect a set-list of old and new. It’s been a little quiet in the Ferdinand camp since 2005’s You Could Have It So Much Better, but Tonight is the result of a solid year of studio lockdown. After their surprise appearance at Glastonbury this year ignited the Park Stage, there’s no doubt the guys still pack a lot of punch live.

And who better to join them on tour than The Cribs? The UK alt-rock heroes are visiting Australia to spruik new album Men’s Needs, Women’s Needs, Whatever – and they’re bringing Johnny Marr with them! With hot young things Red Riders warming the stage at both dates, this’ll be a damn fine way to kick off 2009Ã¢â‚¬Â¦

Spend a night with Franz Ferdinand at the following venues. Tickets on sale Wednesday 29 October.

I'm not even a big fan of The Hives but I said I'd go with a friend.

I hope I can convince her to go to FF instead and ebay the Hives tickets.

The cribs at the annandale was one of the best shows I'd seen there. He hit himself in the face with the mic halfway through the set and poured blood for the rest of the night but it didn't phase him at all.

Braveheart81 - i haven't been to the Enmore but the Palace is a decent venue. reasonable sized floor with a couple of levels at the back and balconies.

The problem is I have a cricket game in Bowral on the Sunday, so I wouldn't be able to fly to Melbourne until Monday afternoon. Monday night at FF, then would probably do some shopping or something on the Tuesday before flying back in the afternoon in reasonable time for The Hives.

Would also mean taking an extra day of annual leave on the Tuesday (already had planned to take on the Monday).

Would certainly be lots of fun, but I don't even like The Hives that much. I just liked them live when I saw them previously and my friend was looking for someone to go with.

Still... I *might* do it.

last night was so much fun! Alex is a great performer, i loved all his little dances. highlight was definitely Do You Want To, that was awesome.

i was really impressed with Temper Trap too, i don't know any of their stuff but they were great to watch, they were one of those bands where every member is a great performer, not just the singer.

I just got back from the myspace secret show where me and approx. 100-150 others got to see FF doing their sound check. It was fantastic. They played a 30-40 min set based on asking the crowd for requests. They played mostly lesser know album tracks and a few new ones. It was very good, and if that was the soundcheck, then it sounds like tonight's gig is going to be an absolute ripper! Too bad I'm seeing the hives instead :(

basically with orthodox churchs and alot of eastern european countries, they run of a real old school calander so xmas and easter are on different dates to how they are normally, so xmas is on the 7th of jan every every year and every 6 years or so the easters are on th same date, otherwise they slowly seperate.

and i had a massive family dinner with extended family n all and i tried to leave to make it to franz and go yelled at by family, so i missed it and am kinda pissed off

Yeah I went to this as well. I got on the guest list coz I didn't get into the Death Cab show a while back and they promised me a spot on the list at any secret show so I chose to go to this show.

It was pretty funny looking at all the slutty dressed and fake-tanned underage bimbo's and scene kids. They were all giving us dirty looks coz they'd waited for ages to line-up and get a wristband and in the end we ended-up getting let in first (which I did think was unfair) but we made the most of it and queued up in first place in the cafe and had Alex walk past and excuse himself to me and I didn't realise who it was after he'd gone past. We jumped on the barrier right in front of Alex and watched a great show with full lighting of all but 2 audience requests. One of which "Dark Of The Matinee", had Alex inviting about 15 members of the audience to join the band onstage to sing the chorus!

Songs included (in no particular order and incomplete):

Walk Away
Shopping For Blood
Dark Of The Matinee
Michael
What You Wanted
Ulysses

I'm not sure if the second last song is called that but I'm sure I'll be corrected.

The guys, except for the bass player, were just really friendly and polite and seemed to love every second of it as they really got into it. It was just a shame they had to leave to give their support acts time to do their sound checks as they would have played for longer but Ulysses was a great finale to the set.

Franz were awesome at The Palace last night in Melbourne. We got there at 9:30 just in time for the Temper Trap and were quite surprised to see the venue already crowded. I'd estimate about 85% of the crowd had already arrived in time to see them. I only had heard one of two of The Temper Trap's songs, but was really impressed. Very enjoyable set.

Franz built their set very well and were awesome to watch (except for the bass player which seems to be a common reaction). The new songs all were terrific live, and Outsiders was truly special. I'm so glad I flew to Melbourne for this gig.

Haha when all those people got up on stage my best friend (you may have seen him the dude with blonde hair lol) kept fake-grinding Nick and just annoying everyone :P

Just came back from this and got the setlist. love how all the bands on the bill alliterated (red riders, temper trap, franz ferdinand).

Anyhoo, missed most of red riders but heard they were on autopilot for most of it. Based solely on my love is stronger than your love, I'd have to agree. Also, missed teh memo that TT became a six-piece. The were good, but there was so much passion pre-music-direction-change taht was lost in all but one song, the opener.

Franz were excellent and know how to work a crowd without being too OTT (Unlike The Hives, but to their defence TH's style needs them to be OTT). New songs were brilliant but the subtle changes and reinterpretations to old ones were the clear highlight. the old five drummer trick during Outsiders happened again. Overall, a good night

Those girls all act like they should be treated like royalty but when you actually try and get an intelligent response from them it's harder than finding a needle in a haystack. If they think that mosh was crazy they should go to a concert with a death circle, crowd surfing and stage diving ala Parkway Drive or something like that and then they'd realise that wasn't a mosh. I could probably mosh harder by myself in my livingroom! I think that MAB could teach them a thing or two! Ha ha! :D

I complained to Myspace coz I missed 3/4 of Death Cab's show due to their disorganisation and I paid $20 for a cab to see 2 songs. If these girls think they'll get anywhere by complaining about Franz failing to play their two top rating songs they've got another thing coming. Plus these secret shows are always meant to be bands playing songs they don't usually play in their set and I loved the fact that they took requests for almost all (except for 2 songs) of the show.

It was definitely a great show and I'm really glad that I went. Do you remember any of the songs I missed on my list? Also, what time did you start lining-up?

Yeah they really need to fucking organise these things better. Starting nearly one hour late is just not acceptable.

I got there at about 2. There would have already been about 80 people lined up.

haha there was this really strange guy who came through the line giving everyone raffle tickets with numbers on them. It was weird though because there was no-one from the myspace crew around. Heaps of people left the line because they thought they could go and come back with the "ticket", but they came back only to be told by the myspace people that they knew nothing about it and it was just some random guy who decided to show up :P

People can be idiots sometimes. And yeah, I'd never line-up for a secret show unless I knew 100% I was within the first 100 to queue. It was pretty shit that they started it an hour after they planned as Franz would have played more songs I reckon. It was pretty funny to see Nick getting dragged away from the stage by their tour manager.
