Are you ready to rumble Big Day Out styles? The rumour mill has been buzzing more than ever this year in anticipation of the 2009 Big Day Out Line-up and finally we have the real deal in our shaky little hands.

As previously confirmed by the BDO peeps our favourite icon with a heart of gold – Neil Young – is heading up the bill and marching alongside him will be those mischievous fellas the Arctic Monkeys. In 2002 The Prodigy tore up the main stage off the back of their album Fat Of The Land and now Keith and his lads will be back to prove they still have it for BDO 2009.

The Aussie contingent is also strong this year with The Living End, Sneaky Sound System, Cut Copy, Cog, The Grates and FL fave’s Eddy Current Suppression Ring all billed for this tour.

Seconded. I really hope they announce sideshows before tickets go on sale, but its not likely, so i'll have to grab a BDO ticket and see what happens.

same thing happened last year with BDO, bunch of bands ive seen before and am not desperate to see again, and one biggie which i cant/wont miss out on for love nor money...

already got my neil young ticket, so theres no problems there...

I was going to tip the Monkeys after I saw all their clips on Rage on Saturday night.

Not much at all in the line-up really, plenty to keep the masses happy (TLE, Ting Tings, Cog, Sneaky Sound System). Not a great deal for real music lovers.

Will go purely for Neil Young. My Morning Jacket will be great to see live as will be Eddy Current.

Hopefully The Prodigy drag all the bogans away from Neil Youngs set.

Maybe our collective lack of excitement in the BDO lineup is a reflection of some of our lack of excitement in relation to the best albums of 2008.

There really hasn't been as many massive breakthrough albums as there have been in previous years.

Hopefully that means 2009 will be epic.

Would love to sideshow it up but I live in Adelaide and don't know where exactly I will be working early next year. I was hoping Neil Young would just do a normal tour and (really fucking wished) that he would play Festival Theater. I clearly under estimated his popularity, I've always loved his stuff in silence.

Can someone help me around TVOTR I downloaded their discography after hearing 'Wolf like me' and honestly think after a quick skim through mainly Cookie Mountain that most of their stuff is pretty average (bar Wolf).

Maybe I was wrong with all the hate and its not the BDO's fault.... I guess back in the 'day there was basically the BDO or Homebake if you wanted to save $50 and only see Aussie bands....

these days there's BDO, Soundwave, Falls, Pyramid, Great Escape, Come Together, Peats Ridge, V Fest, Future Music, and all the others competing for the big names.

I'd be interested to see how it differs these days when booking bands over summer for multiple festivals... if you combined the upcoming BDO and Soundwave lineups together, that'd be the equivalent of a BDO lineup alone from 1998-2004 except now you have to pay for 2 festivals.

Shame....

There is a solution though... Cities of the Red Night, Lansdowne Hotel, 16th October, 8pm, free. Be there, jerks!

There are so many festivals each year now that there is more competition over the big names (let's face it, there really aren't that many bands out there who are big enough to headline large music festivals). It is also far harder to pick acts who haven't been out here recently, so we see plenty of repetition.

I'm guessing most of you live in or around a capital city? Being from somewhere that doesnt get too many live gigs, a festival like BDO is great regardless of the lineup. Considering it costs the same to get to a festival as it does to a sideshow, it is just more economical to travel for festivals. Dont mean any disrespect but it seems a lot of people are quite jaded.

yeah i guess it is a matter of looking at it from other peoples perspective as well. the thing about a festival is that it is (supposed to be) designed to cater for everyones tastes. Which is why it is reasonable to expect thousands of people going just to fet f**ked up as well as those there for the music!

Some notes from today's Herald-Sun about the festival:

- Prodigy will headline the boiler room, with Sneaky Sound System playing on the main stage.
- Vivian Lees on the Living End: "They're probably the top Australian band at the moment"
- The Streets wasn't booked "he's a regular visitor, we can't keep taking people on every second year".
- Lees denied reports that Radiohead will be added to the lineup, and that they lost a seven-figure bidding war for Fatboy Slim to Good Vibrations.
- L&W are still in talks with The Saboteurs to play in 2009.

I know how popular SSS is. It's just depressing how ordinary they are now. I used to actually like SSS years ago when they played Sundays at Hugo's, and if anyone ever saw them play with Louie Austen singing, I'm sure you'd agree it was great.

BDO isn't stupid. They know how many people SSS will attract on the main stage. I'm a bit surprised that The Prodigy will play the boiler room though. It would be kind of cool to see the entire main stage go absolutely nuts for Breath and Smack My Bitch Up. Not that I'm planning to go, so it doesn't really matter.
