Canberra: The Week That Was(12/08/08)

This week Canberran’s had a plethora of delicious gigs to choose from. From raw indie to reggae beats, the week had it all.

Thursday night in Civic is where it’s at if you don’t have to work the next day. The more mainstream bars and clubs offering discounted booze attracted a sizeable number of youngsters. Meanwhile a small crowd assembled outside Bar 32 as Gangbusters was preparing to kick off. Inside was a modest crowd made up of your typical indie music lovers keen for something different. First up was Go-Go Second Chance Virgin followed by The Red Line Is Them and finally From The South, wrapping up another successful Gangbusters event.

If you missed the news or have been hiding in some anti-indie world then you might not know Gangbusters has gone weekly for the same sweet price of $5. This week sees Variodivers, The Cherry Marines and Margaret Helen King play our favourite little venue.

The Herd returned to Canberra on Friday night playing to a packed crowd at ANU Bar and as always put on a stellar show. Check out the pics here!

As always the FL kids hit REV on Friday night to cause a little ruckus. To keep things interesting Bar 32 are bringing us a spanking brand new Saturday night nicely named Shakedown, promising indie, electro, dance tunes to keep you dancing and happy. I can even reveal that yours truly played a couple of sets at this snappy new night and it’s only going to get bigger and better: stay tuned! This week was also the launch of VAMP formerly of Bar 32 now hosted at Holy Grail Civic where DJ Robot and Evil Chris are promising days reminiscent of Toast.

Fresh from playing at Splendour in the Grass and supporting the Band of Horses show in Sydney, The Gin Club were back in action on Saturday night at the Greenroom. If you haven’t seen them play before, you are missing out. Our girl on the ground called them a “band of truly talented storytellers, musicians and songwriters… The Gin Club is a good as it gets”.

Lastly in a frantic week, the Heavyweight Invasion weighed in at Transit Bar for a crazy night of bass, heavy hip hop, reggae and dancehall. The night featured: Elf Tranzporter, Chant Down Sound + Dizzy Dee as well as Tribe of Kings. Bbest of all, courtesy of our lovely friends from Transit Bar.. it was free!

This week is a big one! Where to start? The Boat People, Gangbusters, Kasey Chambers, Brigitte Handley and The Dark Shadows, Teenagers in Tokyo along with the fabulous Purple Sneakers DJ’s as well as the usual club nights.

Until next week, enjoy your week of music and if you’ve got something to share hit the Canberra Forum and tell us about it.
