Led Zep in Mornington

The Mornington Peninsula Regional Gallery doesn’t exactly scream of debauched hedonism, but from May 28th until the 6th of July the gallery will up its rock quotient as it plays host to an exhibition devoted to the glory of the original rock gods – Led Zeppelin.

The collection assembled by the Lismore Gallery features forty black and white photographs documenting the band’s 1972 Sydney concert of their only Australian tour, shot by Ted Harvey and acclaimed by Robert Plant as some of the best ever taken of the band. Well over 28,000 fans were in the crowd at that show with plenty of punters scrambling over the fence and avoiding the princely ticket price of $4. For their efforts they were rewarded with a three hour gig from one of the finest rock bands the world has known.

Harvey has been inspired by another legendary group – Bob Geldolf’s BandAid – to produce a very limited edition of Art Print set of some of these rare Led Zeppelin photographs with 100% of the proceeds going to Compassion Australia to help target and support 100 Brazilian children now living in poverty.

Beside the photos of the band on that Sunday afternoon back in ‘72 are paintings and sculptures inspired by the antics and music of the Led Zep. Artists included in the exhibition include Danius Kesminas, Geoff Harvey and Mental As Anything’s Reg Mombassa.
