Victorian purveyors of folk-filled rock, Augie March have announced that they will be starting work on their as yet untitled fourth album in late May of this year.
Having released three albums in twelve years, with four years between albums two and three, Augie March are infamous for their strict standard when it comes to recording and writing new material. However, as Moo, You Bloody Choir was a platinum-selling release, which was also awarded the Australian Music Prize, you can see they have such strict standards for a reason.
Despite the sparsity of their releases, songwriter Glenn Richards’ output is prolific. With only the very best of the material making it past the brutal assessment stages, a lot of the band’s work is left on the cutting room floor.
So fine is Augie March’s pedigree that they attracted Joe Chiccarelli (Zappa, U2, Beck, The Shins, White Stripes) into the producer’s chair. Chiccarelli and the band will be heading into Neil Finn’s Roundhead studio in Auckland from May 26 for a month or more to work on the album, slated for release later this year.
The band spent large parts of 2007 touring North America, building a fan-base and earning glowing reviews. But after having played this year’s Big Day Out, the band decided that it was time to start working on the new album.
“Sorry to everyone that has been requesting shows around the world,” they stated on their website, “but the next album has to be made – the fruit has to be picked when ripe.”
