Flamingo Crash: kicking it onthe road
Thu 13th Mar, 2008 in Local News
Fast-growing Melbourne music company, The Staple Group, welcomes a new subsidiary – Sidekick – and Sidekick’s very first label signing is Melbourne indie rock group Flamingo Crash.
Sidekick now sits along side Boomtown Records, Blueprint Music and Hopeless Records Australia as one of The Staple Group’s recording endeavours. Under the experienced eyes of Jerry Soer ( Manager for Young & Restless, Gameboy/Gamegirl and Miami Horror ), Sidekick will work with some of the Australia’s best indie, rock, electro and dance groups, beginning with Flamingo Crash.
Flamingo Crash has been described as a band with “…with one foot entrenched in the past ( Wire, XTC, Talking Heads, The Ex ) and another in some ethereal neverland” (Rave Magazine). The independent release of a limited edition Shoot the Lights Out seven-inch green vinyl gained the sudden interest of the international media with stand-out reviews in London, New York City and Tokyo. The track was also used in an Australian TV commercial for Volvo. Japanese record label VJR signed the band in June 2007 on the strength of the single alone.
Flamingo Crash recorded their debut album Triangle Island with ARIA Award winning producer Magoo ( Midnight Oil, Regurgitator, Gerling ) in his new Applewood Church studio. The album mixes were then sent from the rural Australian centre to the heart of New York City to be mastered by Steve Fallone ( Sonic Youth, The Strokes, TV On The Radio, James Brown ). The result is an intelligent take on indie rock, with electro beats, rock – œn roll riffs and colourful pop grooves. Sidekick is thrilled to be releasing Triangle Island in stores and online from April 12.
About the new singing, Jerry Soer said “I’ve been a fan of Flamingo Crash since I first saw them play live. They’re very talented musicians with fresh ideas and I was surprised that their record remains unreleased in Australia despite its success in Japan. I’m very excited to be working with them on this release and I can’t wait until everyone hears how rad this album is!”
Recent overseas and Australian tours have further established Flamingo Crash as a band not to forget, as they continually climb the steps of the Australian indie scene, previously playing alongside The Go! Team, Lily Allen, The Bravery, Love is All, The Presets and You Am I. In addition, the band has received an overwhelming success in Japan with a headline tour there in October 2007.
