The annual WOMADelaide festivities took over Adelaide’s Botanic Park on the weekend, for three days of music and cultural programmes. As ever, scorching weather was matched by an equally scorching line-up.
US virtuoso Beirut commanded the stage on both Friday and Saturday with his eight-piece orchestra, while Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings brought it home on Sunday in characteristically soul-stirring fashion. Elsewhere, homegrown artists were a resounding hit: among them John Butler Trio, Sarah Blasko and Watussi.
Of course, it wasn’t all about the music though. With its come-one-come-all edict, the festival offered various workshops, kids’ activities, street theatre and arts initiatives. Also fundamental to the weekend was eco-friendliness, with a range of measures in place to promote sustainability. In the words of our reviewer, “WOMADelaide is unlike any other festival experience. Right from the moment of walking through the gates it seems as if you’re heading off to a private sanctuary – albeit with 20,000 other people.”
