The best of Australia’s indie scene will get together to rock the Corner Hotel on Friday March 28 for a special one-time show, Uh-Huh. The seven act star-studded line-up features Young & Restless, Dardanelles, The Galvatrons, Cassette Kids, Flamingo Crash, Reptiles and Death-Before-Death Gang. Tickets for Uh-Huh are bound to go fast so get in quick.
Originally from Canberra, Young & Restless have made a mammoth splash in the Australian music scene during 2007 – taking out the triple j’s inaugural – œunearthed’ J Award, the QANTAS Spirit of Youth Award as well as scoring a triple j feature album upon the release of their self-titled debut. Their busy year of touring has included two national headline tours, touring nationally again with Midnight Juggernaughts and playing Homebake, Pyramid Rock, Trackside, Essential and Stonefest Festivals! “They aren’t just a few kids who own the stage with some kind of post-hardcore athleticism; they actually back up their kinetic energy with a raw, kick-arse sound.
After forming at the beginning of 2006, Dardanelles have quickly built an impressive live reputation and a very loyal following. The band’s first single, – œOrigami Tree’ spent four weeks in the Top 10 of the Australian Alternative Radio Play Charts. Their reputation has earned them live shows alongside 1990’s, Midnight Juggernauts, The Howling Bells, Cut Copy, Damn Arms and Dappled Cities. The band’s success was further magnified by the release of their full-length debut Mirror Mirror in September 2007. Dardanelles will blast their fusion of indie, pop, electric and punk to a home crowd at Uh-Huh.
Also playing at Uh-Huh is Melbourne’s own The Galvatrons. Currently on tour with Shihad and Horsell Common, The Galvatrons are packed full of Van Halen riffs with an 80’s aura. The Galvatrons have quickly made a name for themselves with their bandfrom-outer-space vibe, gripping on-stage presence and just-for-fun attitude.
Flamingo Crash have been described as a band with “…with one foot entrenched in the past ( Wire, XTC, Talking Heads, The Ex ) and another in some ethereal neverland” (Rave Magazine). After releasing the limited edition – œShoot the Lights Out’ seven-inch green vinyl, the Flamingo Crash have recorded their debut album Triangle Island, produced in Australia by Magoo ( Midnight Oil, Regurgitator, Gerling ) and mastered in New York City by Steve Fallone ( The Strokes, Sonic Youth, TV on the Radio ). The album is set for release this month! Recent overseas and Australian tours have further established Flamingo Crash as a band not to miss live, previously playing alongside supports for The Go! Team, Lily Allen, The Bravery, Love is All, The Presets and You Am I. So don’t miss them as they play Uh-Huh.
Sydney’s Cassette Kids will join the impressive Uh-Huh roster. With a list of supports for bands including New Young Pony Club, Children Collide, Van She, Riot In Belgium, Muscles and Ajax, Cassette Kids have proved that what started as cheap thrills and a passion for performance, has flourished into the hottest new talent of 2007. Summoning the likes of Bjork, Klaxons and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs into a mixtape of new-wave goodness, Cassette Kids will leave the Melbourne crowd mesmerised and screaming for more.
Described as a “…twenty-first century Nirvana with tight jeans”, newcomers Reptiles round-out the Uh-Huh line-up with their garage/punk influenced new-wave sound. After bursting out of nowhere and delighting indie punters with frighteningly exciting performances that have had kids talking and security guards having to break up mosh pits. Reptiles, having just finished recording their debut EP with Scott Horscroft ( The Presets, Sleepy Jackson ), and touring nationally to promote their lead single, are bringing their psyched-out sound from the swamp to the Corner. Do not miss these youngsters spit their chainsaw riffs and speed-ball rhythms.
Finally, Uh-Huh welcomes Death-Before-Death Gang. This local two-piece outfit screams out a unique and crowd-pleasing indie rock. Their short career has already included shows with Talons, Yama Boy, Atencion and Learn The Splits.
Uh-Huh is at the Corner Hotel on March 28 with Young & Restless, Dardanelles, The Galvatrons, Flamingo Crash, Cassette Kids, Reptiles and Death-Before-Death Gang.
