The Adelaide Big Day Out has always encouraged ticket holders to catch public transport and not to rely on cars to attend the largest single day music and youth culture festival in South Australia.
South Australian BDO fans have enthusiastically embraced this with figures showing over 30,000 people leave their cars at home and use public transport to the festival.
In the past, punters travelling to the show from either across the state or interstate by car could park across the road in the Adelaide City Council U-Park, Park 22 [Wikaparndo Wirra].
In 2007 the Adelaide City Council has adopted the following policy:
“Council’s Community Land Management Plan (CLMP) for this Park [Wikaparndo Wirra (Park 22)] does not support car parking for events held outside the Park Lands” – Mike Stegeman Acting CEO Adelaide City Council
The Adelaide Big Day Out is a mere 100m from the Adelaide City Council boundary, which means festival goers arriving by car can no longer access Park 22.
Despite the Adelaide Big Day assessment that having festival goers parking in surrounding suburbs and thus having to travel across more major roads is placing them at greater risk. An assessment supported by SA Police Emergency and Major Events. Adelaide City Council have stood by their position that because the major event that is the Adelaide Big Day Out is not in the ACC area they will not open the U-Park in Park 22 and place patrons and the peace at risk.
So it would seem if it’s an event in the Adelaide City Council Area then you can park your car in the parklands but if it’s not then too bad. A pretty dissapointing scenario in the ‘Festival State’. So we ask that all Adeladie Big Day Out’ers leave the car at home this year.
