Birds of Tokyo and The John Butler Trio headed the field as WAM announced the nominees for this year’s WAMi Awards.
Nominated for Most Popular Album and Best Rock Act, Birds of Tokyo are up for gongs in six categories on the back of debut LP Day One. Remarkably, all four members are in the running to win individual prizes in the industry-voted awards.
Cementing his place at the top of the blues and roots tree, John Butler took home five nominations, after yet another mega-selling album. The one-time busker at Fremantle markets got the nod for Most Popular Album, Most Popular Act, Most Popular Music Video, Best Blues and Roots Act and Best Guitarist.
Of the newcomers, Felicity Groom and the Black Black Smoke and Abbe May and the Rockin’ Pneumonia fared best, with four nominations each. Last year’s Favourite Newcomer WAMi winners, Sugar Army, also scored four.
The winners will be revealed on February 21 at Beck’s Music Box on the Perth Esplanade. Playing on the night are Jebediah, Birds of Tokyo, Blue Shaddy, Yabu Band with special guests Groovylips and the Yang, Felicity Groom and the Black Black Smoke and DJs Dan the Man and Rok Riley.
