American Sufjan Stevens has just announced his first Australian tour beginning in January 2008. His unique blend of storytelling, folk, fantasy and autobiography intertwine to create classic songs. Stevens will be performing at the Sydney Festival and at headlining shows in Brisbane and Melbourne.
Along with his step-father Lowell, Stevens operates his own label, Asthmatic Kitty Records, which was aptly named after his cat who suffers from acute feline asthma. Obviously, Stevens isn’t your typical songwriter. He prefers to do things a little differently and usually does so by embarking on projects of epic proportions.
Not only does he have grand plans to record 50 albums, one for each of the US states (Michigan and Illinois down, 48 to go…), he has also made a record for each animal of the Chinese Zodiac (_Enjoy Your Rabbit_), a five-disk Christmas box set, and a symphonic tone-poem for the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway. Therefore it goes without saying that when Stevens makes his appearances in Australia, there are sure to be epic as well.
