Silverchair were the big winners at the 2007 ARIA Awards last night, taking home five awards from all five of their nominations.
The Newcastle trio once dubbed ‘Nirvana in pyjamas’ became the most successful band in ARIA history, taking their overall total to 19 with wins for Best Group, Single of the Year, Highest Selling Single, Best Album and Best Rock Album.
Sneaky Sound System, who began the night with six nominations, received just two awards, for Best Dance Release and Breakthrough Artist (album), despite the nominations coming for the self-titled album released in August 2006.
The other big nominees, Powderfinger, were unlucky to be pitted against Silverchair, losing out to their Across the Great Divide comrades in every bout.
One of the biggest surprises of the night was Gotye, pipping John Butler and Paul Kelly to the Best Male Artist award for remix album Mixed Blood. Butler wasn’t to go home empty-handed though, receiving awards for Best Independent Release and Best Blues and Roots Album for Grand National. While the two awards paled in comparison to Silverchair’s five, Butler and his trio won the crowd’s approval, appearing live alongside country superstar Keith Urban.
Best Female Artist was given to Missy Higgins, while Sarah Blasko scored Best Pop Release for What the Sea Wants, the Sea Will Have. Brisbane kids Operator Please capped off a stellar year with the award for Breakthrough Release (single) and Best Urban Album went to the Hilltop Hoods for The Hard Road Restrung.
While Silverchair may have stolen most of the spotlight, Nick Cave won the biggest cheer of the night as he accepted a spot in the ARIA Hall of Fame. Though the induction failed to extend Cave’s The Birthday Party and Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds bandmates over questions of their origin, the iconic figure used him moment of glory to induct a list of collaborators topped by Warren Ellis and Mick Harvey alongside himself.
