As if they need any further encouragement, but wowsers around the country were outraged when Channel [V] inadvertedly encouraged its viewers to share their most treasured memories of everybody’s favourite life-destroying methamphetamine.
It was an opportunity for advertising/marketing synergy that went horribly wrong when, as part of a promotional initiative for Will Ferrell’s skating movie Blades of Glory, they put a call out to their viewers to SMS their “favourite memories on ice” which would then be flashed across the screen in typical Channel [V] style.
Of course, the innocent request was misconstrued and instead of relating that time they tripped and fell on their ass at an ice skating rink, viewer comments began flashing across the screen about how they thought ice was just a fantastic, amazing drug. And about that time they got sooooo wasted that it took ten cops to beat them down (probably).
Outraged parents began shrieking, and Foxtel naturally went into damage control with the general manager of music channels Tara King rushing out a media release saying, “Channel V in no way endorses the use of drugs and in fact it is currently in development on an educational series for a youth audience on the drug ice.”
Stay tuned for Channel [V]’s educational documentary on the horrors of drug use. Wow, can’t wait for that one…
