Justin Hawkins, former lead singer of The Darkness, has announced his intention to vie for the UK’s spot at this year’s Eurovision song contest.
His bid for the nomination has drawn ridicule from the notoriously harsh UK press. Hawkins is going up against some of the UK’s more formidable pop talents, clashing with former East 17 singer Brian Harvey and Liz McClarnon (ex-Atomic Kitten). He acknowledges that he will not receive critical acclaim for his duet with Beverlei Brown, yet he wants to go through with it.
He states: “What on earth could I possibly hope to achieve by being the object of ridicule for millions of people? Everything I do is almost trying to hammer home the point that I don’t care.”
