A report published in the Los Angeles Times has named Rage Against the Machine as headliners for this year’s Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival. Published yesterday, the report also confirmed Bjork, Red Hot Chili Peppers and Arcade Fire for the April 27-29 festival that takes place in Indio, California.
Rage Against the Machine split in 2000 after tensions between vocalist Zack de la Rocha and his bandmates hit breaking point. The band’s 1992 self-titled debut wrote the rulebook for what would later become known as ‘nu-metal’, while Evil Empire (1996) and The Battle of Los Angeles (1999) consolidated their trademark blend of hard rock with political activism.
Since the split, de la Rocha’s floundering solo career has been overshadowed by Tom Morello, Tim Commerford and Brad Wilk’s new band. The trio joined Soundgarden vocalist Chris Cornell to form Audioslave in 2002 but, despite commercial success, they never managed to escape comparisons to the member’s previous projects.
Crowded House is another name we’re likely to see when the lineup is made official in the coming weeks. Rumours of the band’s reunion had already been circulating and, with the success of the recent Finn Brothers and Split Enz tours, Neil and Tim won’t need to worry about ticket sales at all.
