Paris Hilton Targeted ByBritish Guerrilla Artist
Mon 4th Sep, 2006 in International News
For his latest prank, guerrilla artist, Banksy, has doctored five-hundred copies of Paris Hilton’s debut album. He visited fourty-eight HMV, Virgin and independent record stores in cities right around the UK including Bristol, Brighton, Birmingham, Newcastle, Glasgow and London.
At each store he visited, Banksy replaced Hilton’s CD with his own remixes, which included titles like ‘Why am I Famous?’, ‘What Have I Done?’ and ‘What Am I For?’ He also changed pictures of Hilton in the CD sleeve to show the American rich-kid topless and with a dog’s head. The prankster still left the original barcode so that people could purchase the CD without realising it had been interfered with.
A spokesman for HMV said that the chain had recovered seven CDs from two of their Brighton stores but was unaware that other locations had been affected as no customers had complained or returned any doctored version, he said.
Banksy is famous for his provocative graffiti and subversion tactics like sneaking doctored versions of classic paintings into major art galleries.
