Billy Corgan: "I’ll piss onfucking Radiohead"

Stop the press: Billy Corgan has slagged off a band.

While on the promotional trail for his new album Oceania, which is currently streaming on itunes for free, Corgan has let rip on musical messiahs Radiohead declaring that he will gladly “piss on” Thom Yorke and co.

Speaking with Antiquiet about what he hopes to achieve with his new music, Corgan got all riled up, as he tends to, ranting: “I can’t think of any people outside of Weird Al Yankovic who have both embraced and pissed on rock more than I have. Obviously there’s a level of reverence, but there’s also a level of intelligence to even know what to piss on. Because I’m not pissing on Rainbow. I’m not pissing on Deep Purple. But I’ll piss on fucking Radiohead, because of all this pomposity. This value system that says Jonny Greenwood is more valuable than Ritchie Blackmore. Not in the world I grew up in.”

“Is Ritchie Blackmore a better guitar player than me and Jonny Greenwood? Yes. Have we all made valuable contributions? Yes. I’m not attacking that. I’m attacking the pomposity that says this is more valuable than that. I’m sick of that. I’m so fucking sick of that. I’m so fucking sick of it and nobody seems to tire of it.”

He truly is sick of it.

When FL spoke to Cogran about the new album back in April he was equally confident about his musical legacy, telling us: “Jimmy and I in a room is still better than about 99 percent of the music that I’ve ever heard, outside of bands named The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, The Cure, Depeche Mode, Nirvana, you know the list.”

Billy will land on our shores this July to headline Splendour and play three sideshows. However, with all this pissing on people we strongly suggest you avoid the front row.

if you read the full interview and actually look at what he is getting at, the quote makes perfect sense (in a way). radiohead are held in a higher regard than other bands, there is a 'pomposity' that surrounds everything they do.

according to the press they can never do anything wrong - even though i love them every album since kid a has been following the same formula. i think corgan is a bit of a dick sometimes and not a huge fan since the pumpkins broke up, but at least the guy (and his band/s) are taking risks with their albums.

Radiohead albums have been consistently good. Radiohead can and should be held in higher regard than most other bands because they are better than most other bands.

The biggest risk Corgan has been taking is tarnishing his legacy by releasing crap and being a complete dick. He is achieving this in spades.

The new line up is great. Mike Byrne is an awesome drummer - best for his age in the world. Nicole Fiorentino is a great bass player and super hot. And Jeff Schroeder is a more than adequate replacement for James Iha. Corgan shreds as well as anyone on the planet.

i see the point he is making, but does the pompousness come from the band or from public perception? trendier-than-thou outlets like pitchfork will bend over backwards to fellate radiohead while delivering snide comments about how "out of touch" someone like corgan is. but that is the fault of the media, and not the band.

fair enough. yes, too early to make any definitive judgements on a brand new album.

for what it's worth, i had a friend who was working for a small radio station about 5 years ago. she got to interview billy and from all reports he was a really nice guy. not just in the interview, but beforehand as well while waiting.

they have played 3 shows in the entire country - 2 in syd 1 in melb (they cancelled a 2nd melb show).
no tour here for kid a, amnesiac, or in rainbows - & we now only get east coast shows for king of limbs (which is average save for maybe codex) nearly 2 years after it's come out... & then charge $130 for all tix - even the nosebleeds.

actions speak louder than words... ;)

yeesh, i think you're taking it out of context here.

the second melbourne show was cancelled because thom's voice was fucked, not because they were throwing some axl rose hissy fit. other albums? a tour would have been nice, but australia is, as they say, the arse end of the world. they have that thing about not wanting to fly very often. and, uh, you think radiohead get to decide what the ticket prices are?

not saying they are the best with "fan service", but it's not such a simple matter.

It's great to see a live band, but a band that tours more often and plays more shows is in no way a better band than one that doesn't.

You can tell Billy talks to Courtney love a lot. They probably get drunk and bitch about todays music and relive the good old days. They tend to say similar opinionated comments in the media.

Anyhow, No the title of this article doesn't really relate to the context of the article (no shock for a media outlet). But it got the desired result by FL and I have to admit, Corgan is getting a lot more media attention now than he did with American Gothic or Zeitgeist
