Skrillex named one of theGreatest Guitarists of AllTime
Sun 6th May, 2012 in International News
Spin magazine have published their list of the Greatest Guitarists of All Time courting their fair share hate (and page views) trolling us all by placing a certain wub-stepping party starter with a distinctively asymmetrical haircut in the opening slot.
Although Spin says they’re not sure if Skrillex has never held a guitar in his life (for the record he did during his time with From First to Last) but they justify his inclusion by claiming that “no contemporary musician has a more primal understanding of adrenaline-pumping, pulse-raising, chest-caving bulldozer riffs than dubstep mosh ambassador Skrillex.”
There is some logic to that apparent madness, as the list also features another non-guitar playing ‘Greatest Guitarist of All Time’ – RUN DMC’s Jam Master Jay an impressively high position. As Spin explains “the way Jay manipulated the work of guitarists… resulted was a new way of hearing guitars [and influenced] everyone from Tom Morello to Korn.”
Apparently at Spin they “don’t worship “guitar gods,” but prefer [their] axe-wielders to be resourceful, egalitarian, flawed, and human” and they’re celebrating an “alternative canon that kicks in with the Velvet Underground trying to erase that form entirely, making guitar solos gauche and using instruments as sadomasochistic tools for hammering out sheets of white heat” or something like that. So don’t expect to see any Hendrix, Clapton or Robert Johnson on the list.
