Lemmy: Don’t buy the newMotorhead box set

Motorhead’s new 15-disc Limited Collectors’ Edition – The Complete Early Years Box Set – may come in a Motörhead skull with red light-up eyes, but it will set you back over $600 and Lemmy’s not happy about it.

“Unfortunately greed once again rears its yapping head,” Lemmy has complained. “I would advise against it even for the most rabid completists! Motörhead have no control over what’s done with these early songs, and don’t want fans to think that the band is involved in putting out such a costly box set. The band hopes fans will choose these new releases over this outrageously expensive box set.”

Complaints about record labels profiteering from reissues have also recently been voiced by Elvis Costello, who called his latest box-set an ”elaborate hoax [as] the price appears to be either a misprint or a satire” , and Trent Reznor who branded a recent reissue of his Pretty Hate Machine album “record label bullshit”.

would i be right in saying that the popularity of itunes will end up killing off the "greatest hits" compilation most bands tend to bring out after 3 or 4 successful albums? so the record labels need to find an alternative to that so box sets are the way to go for them.

on the other hand, itunes asks for 30% of profits for literally only being a space to put your music. it has no accountability to the success or failure or your music, so artists who aren't part of a record label are pretty much stuck with burdening 100% of the financial risk themselves.
it's not so bad when you consider that recording can be infinitely cheaper than it was in the old days, depending on how you do it, and the record label normally takes about 60% of a band's profit, but if you don't make a successful album all the money you've put into recording and promoting is essentially lost. but 30% profit for doing nothing is laughable, that's why lots of artists have their songs hosted independantly from itunes so they see a higher profit margin.

from what i understand the whole box set concept was born from the idea that people will pay for the music if you give them lots of free stuff (but $600 dollars for a decorated box with a few old cds i fail to see how anything is free), it didn't end up being anywhere nearly as successful as they hoped. that's just what i've heard.

This is patently untrue.

iTunes contribution is the 225 million iTunes Store accounts (as at June 2011). They are providing a massive number of potential customers. Saying they are doing nothing more than hosting the music is completely incorrect.
