Stone Roses resurrected
Wed 19th Oct, 2011 in International News
The rumours were true – the third coming of the Stone Roses is official.
The band has announced their reformation at a press conference in London and will play shows at Manchester’s Heaton Park on the 29th and 30th of June next year. They are also planning an “extensive” world tour and have written new material. Wow! Tickets for the reunion gigs will go on sale this Friday at 9am (GMT).
Stone Roses reunion press conference:
The band brokeup in 1996 with lead singer Ian Brown announcing that after spending “the last 10 years in the filthiest business in the universe, it’s a pleasure to announce the end of the Stone Roses” and ever since the band members have refused to humour reunion rumours. At the press conference Brown claimed that they’ve had “offers to do it two, three times a year” and claims that they decided to reform now because “In times like this you can uplift people.”
As recently as April this year Stone Roses bassist Mani angularly responded to rumours that Stone Roses might be reforming after reports surfaced that lead singer Ian Brown and guitarist John Squire had “buried the hatchet” at the funeral of bassist Mani’s mother. Mani announced that “two old friends meeting up after 15 years to pay their respects to my mother does not constitute the reformation of The Stone Roses. Please fuck off and leave it alone. It isn’t true and isn’t happening.”
Then in June, Squire – who once created a metallic artwork decorated with the phrase “I have no desire whatsoever to desecrate the grave of seminal Manchester pop group The Stone Roses” and displayed it on his website – bemoaned the recent spate of reunions by noting that “When it’s just a get-together for a big payday and everyone gets their old clothes out, that seems tragic to me.” And drummer Alan “Reni” Wren told the NME earlier this week that he “wouldn’t wear The Roses hat til 9T”.
