Flaming Lips frontman Wayne Coyne approached with Death Cab for Cutie’s Ben Gibbard and Nick Harmer backstage at Montreal’s Osheaga festival with a special request – would Death Cab be interested in working on “three or four songs” for collaborative EP with the Flaming Lips?
The request came when Coyne crashed Spinner’s backstage interview with Death Cab and Gibbard apparently leapt on the idea telling Coyne “Let’s do it!” and offering up a “couple things we were working on when we made Codes and Keys” including tunes called Aimless Intellectual and American Waltz.
The Death Cab leader has worked with the Flaming Lips in the past, remixing Do You Realize?? and covering Suddenly Everything Has Changed with his electronic side-project the Postal Service. The Flaming Lips have recently released collaborative EPs featuring Neon Indian, Prefuse 73 and Lightning Bolt and Coyne revealed to the Death Cab crew that collaborations with Nick Cave and Black Moth Super Rainbow are in the works.
