Outrage over Morrissey'sNorway massacre comments ‎

Morrissey punters by declaring that the Norwegian massacre is “nothing” compared to the atrocities committed by the fast food industry.

The former Smiths frontman introduced his track Meat Is Murder at a gig in Warsaw last weekend by announcing that “We all live in a murderous world, as the events in Norway have shown, with 97 dead. Though that is nothing compared to what happens in McDonald’s and Kentucky Fried Shit every day.”

According to Britain’s Daily Mirror fans flocked to web forums to slam the remark and a spokesperson for the singer has issued a statement to address the controversial remarks – “Morrissey has decided not to comment any further as he believes his statement speaks for itself.”

The news follows a report by the Mirror earlier this month that claimed that punters were searched for meat products before entering the venue on the final date’s of Morrissey’s UK tour.

No. That is not my point. The volume in which animal mistreatment occurs in the fast food processing industry sky rockets compared to the event he is likening it to. I find it a terribly poor comparison (because I'm an omnivore) but vegetarians and vegans generally live by the premise that an animal life is as important as a human life. Being one himself, and reaching out to his followers, he's drawn an awkward comparison at an awkward time. It doesn't change the fact that a lot of people who feel strongly on the matter probably agree with him (it just happens that he's stupid enough to say it).

It is a stupid comparison because the militant vegan argument just makes the rest of the world write them off as right win fanatics. All it does is erode the work done by moderate animal rights campaigners who realise that people will always eat meat and compromise is needed. Most of the world will never accept that eating meat is akin to murder but most will accept that the rights of the animals need to be preserved in the process.

The people like Morissey who hold extreme opinions damage their own cause because their views are so far outside what most people will consider reasonable or realistic.

I agree with the point but it doesn't change the fact that Morrissey isn't in a minority. Over the years the numbers of hardcore vegans has definitely been on the rise (personally know a few myself). I don't agree with it, but at the same time I can't refute the fact that people have the right to value an animals life as much as a human. There are far worse beliefs out there, which is why I can understand where he is trying to go with it, but it doesn't change the fact that it was a very stupid thing to say.

That's a fair point. The numbers are still on the rise though and, as I said, I'm aware of many people who maintain that animals and humans are equal. I'm in two minds about it because I can actually compute that belief, though I do not apply it to my own way of living. As a percentage, vegans may account for a small total, but (even without including vegetarians) we're still talking about millions of people.

Either way, I don't think this needs to go any further. We've both given our 2 cents.

I have no problem with people that choose not to eat meat but don't force your views on everyone else. Morrissey strongly believes in his lifestyle and is full of himself, bad combo. It was a poor comparison, the point could have been made without bringing in the recent tragedy.

But what most people consider reasonable or realistic is not his cause, not every vegan protester wants the same thing.

Probably not the smartest thing to say if you want people on your side, but if that's his honest opinion then I can understand his perspective, not that I agree. I'd be more than a little peeved if I was connected to someone affected, but at the same time, no one gives a shit about what Morrissey has to say, it's 2011. And for the same reason, why not share your offensive opinion if you are Morrissey? It's not like you are going to sell any less albums.
