Nirvana’s ‘Nevermind’set for 20th birthday reissue

There are many significant 20th birthday’s in 2011 – Sonic the Hedgehog, Britney’s little sis Jamie Lynn Spears and The Wiggles – and there are also several classic records that will mark their two decade anniversary including Screamadelica, Massive Attack’s Blue Lines, Metallica’s ‘black’ album, Achtung Baby and Pearl Jam’s Ten.

One of the most celebrated albums of rock history Nirvana’s iconic second album, Nevermind, also turns 20 on September 24th and to mark the occasion there’ll be a 4-CD/1-DVD reissue of the record. According to Spin the set will include rarities, b-sides, and unreleased recordings, as well as “unspecified BBC radio appearances and an unreleased concert in its entirety on DVD.”

It sounds like a far more fitting tribute than that abandoned covers tour starring John Paul Young’s son Danny Marx Young and Steve Balbi from Noiseworks. Or Jared Leto’s bizarre MTV Unplugged ‘homage’ .

there was lots of 'stuff' in the pj release, but i thought it was silly to have both the original album and a remix, plus an incomplete dvd of mtv unplugged, which most of the hardcore fans already had, and no other live material. i'd have preferred if they had released the remixed album, an album pulling together all the b-sides and outtakes (even though that would have duplicated some of lost dogs), a complete live dvd (ideally not mtv, but if they used that at least include all of it).

but mainly i was griping about the vs/vitalogy release. there were even more shows that were videoed for that tour, and although the various formats of the release had more or less of the live show, none of them were complete. plus there were only 3 outtakes/demos, when there was more that was recorded (although all of it released elsewhere).

i can see where you're coming from. but in terms of doing special editions the band shot itself in the foot countless times in the past as it releases just about everything. they've spoiled their fans for 20yrs now far more than any other band out there and now when most bands begin to start "spoiling" their fans PJ are struggling to meet the heightened demands of their fanbase.

but i do agree with you about the lack of official video releases around the vs/vitalogy period. im sick of watching grainy vhs footage of that epic australia 1995 tour. i was really hoping this set of re-releases would see a dvd release of that tour but doesn't seem that way.

nevertheless. nobody puts stuff in a box like PJ do.
