New Hives album “sheercool”

In their own words The Hives are ‘the band that could not die’ and ‘the frikkin partymachine’, but while their status as an unkillable party machine remains solid they haven’t added any new albums to the rock jukebox since 2007’s The Black and White Album.

A post on the Hives blog earlier this year revealed that they have finally returned to the studio to “recorded some pretty bad ass tracks… live horns and all” with the band making typically overblown declarations about the quality of their tunes – “One is a speeding train, another one is also a speeding train, another one’s got swagger and another one is sheer cool.”

The band is heading back to Australia in July for Splendour, On the Brightside and a trio of sideshows, so FL asked drummer Chris Dangerous why the new record has taken so long. He answer is basically that The Hives aren’t any good at multi tasking while on the road. “We can’t really focus on two such big things at the same time,” he explains, “When we are on tour, every night we try to beat the night before in terms of performance and everything. So we spend a lot of time figuring out ways to get better on every night of every tour. So we can’t be focusing on being creative and writing new songs and stuff like that. And we tour a lot.”

“When we release a record we tour anywhere from eighteen months to two and a half years to go round the globe and get to all the places that want to see us. When we get home we start working on a new record straight away. If we want to release records faster we have to tour less. Until we can clone ourselves or get a matter transporter…”

The good news is that they’ve been working in the studio “every day for three or four months now, so we are getting closer and closer” to a new album. There’s still no release date for it, but Dangerous says that the new music “ really gets [the Hives] excited” so we’re looking forward to hearing it live when the best dressed men in rock and roll take to the stage in July.

Stay tuned for the full Hives interview on Friday this week
