Nick Cave, Warren Ellis, Atticus Ross and Japanese composer Shigeru Umebayashi have all scored ( Dias de Gracia ) which premiered at the Cannes Film Festival.
In order to depict three separate storylines which take place in Mexico City during the World Cup in 2002, 2006, and 2010 writer/director Everardo Gout enlisted three separate groups of composers for the film.
Nick Cave and Warren Ellis composed the soundtrack for the ‘02 segment, creating what Gout describes as “a piece which superbly integrates sounds, noises, urban and animal backgrounds, that could have only been composed by them.”
Atticus Ross, who won an Oscar for his work on the The Social Network with Trent Reznor created “something more visceral, more primal” working on “the feeling of fear for the most part,” says Gout. While Japanese composer Shigeru Umebayashi, composed the “quietest and most sophisticated [piece] of the three.”
The film also includes three versions of the George Gershwin classic Summertime performed by Nina Simone, Janis Joplin, and Scarlett Johansson with Massive Attack.
