Pearl Jam’s 20th birthdayfestival

Pearl Jam turns 20 in August and to celebrate the band is headlining a one off festival over the Labor Day long weekend – 3rd-4th September – at Alpine Valley Music Theatre in Wisconsin.

The show will be the only American set for the birthday boys this year and with support coming from The Strokes, Queens Of The Stone Age, Mudhoney, John Doe, Joseph Arthur, Glen Hansard and Liam Finn it’s sure to be quite the celebration.

Oh, and with that lineup there’s a good chance that the punters will be treated to a live version of the Marvin Gaye’s Mercy Mercy Me, which appeared as the b-side to the Strokes single You Only Live Once with guest vocals from Eddie Vedder and Josh Homme.

If you can’t jump on a plane to Wisconsin you can always celebrate by watching Cameron Crowe’s Pearl Jam Twenty and drunkenly singing Better Man abound a campfire with your bros.

I booked my flights and hotel today. Now for the tickets on Monday, which I am expecting to be a major clusterfuck. Going to cost me about $1k everything included from Austin, maybe a bit more depending on how much I eat/drink. For OP, I imagine it would be fairly similar from LA, maybe slightly more for longer flight.

Tickets (per day) are about $105 (reserved seating) and $60 (lawn GA). Think Sidney Myer Music Bowl in Melbourne, just bigger.

It is a legendary venue, but it is still in the middle of butt-fuck Idaho (or Wisconsin to be exact). I'll stay in Milwaukee and catch a 45-minute shuttle each day. The shitty hotels near the venue will charge through the roof.

Was hoping for Soundgarden, as that was a strong rumour. Wouldn't rule it out yet. Many were hoping for Neil or The Who, but that seems a bit unlikely.

I thought QOTSA were a nice touch from their history with Stone Gossard.

Yeah my plan is to fly to Milwauke and get the shuttle and stay in a motel.

i can't wait until these two shows are released on bootleg (best thing about being a PJ fan?) my only two complaints would be the lack of Last Kiss and Immortality and 7 songs from temple of the dog was a bit much but understandable considering that its been 20yrs since that album as well.

the odd about this weekend is that usually when you have a band put on something like you tend to hear stuff the band haven't played in 10 to 15 years but with pearl jam most of these relatively obscure songs are played on a fairly regular basis.

Would've been a blast, but was genuinely expecting something more like the Philly Spectrum shows. The closing show there, Halloween 2009, had a setlist of something like 42 songs, full of hits and rarities (and in costume Devo covers).

Still very jealous of the 10C folk who got to experience this weekend.

no doubt it was awesome to be there. the final encore was a pretty standard last three compared to some of the rumoured special guests etc that were floating round. i think youre right that part of the problem is that pearl jam do so much stuff for their fans that expectations end up set very high, but still...
