TV On The Radio bassist GerardSmith dies age 34

TV On The Radio’s bassist Gerard Smith has succumbed to his battle with lung cancer, age 34.

The band released the following statement this morning: “We are very sad to announce the death of our beloved friend and bandmate, Gerard Smith, following a courageous fight against lung cancer. Gerard passed away the morning of April 20th, 2011. We will miss him terribly.”

Smith has been a member of TVOTR since 2005 and only recently revealed his battle with lung cancer, which merely weeks ago the band was still confident he would beat.

His last contribution to the band was for their new album Nine Types Of Light, which has received rave reviews and was described its FasterLouder reviewer as the band’s “most creatively comfortable release yet.”

It's really sad that he was diagnosed so late as well. If it was picked up early he may have had a better chance. This is really sad.

This sucks.

I think I'd mixed up the news about him and MCA of the Beastie Boys since I was under the impression he'd developed cancer during the hiatus but he'd been treated and was doing okay now.

never got to see him live but i'm sure he was an important part of Dear Science which is probably one of the best album i have ever had the pleasure of hearing.

This is terrible terrible news. He seemed like a fantastic guy and a real gentlemen, I really feel for the band and his family. I feel so grateful that I had the privilege to see him perform in 2009. A great musician who will be sorely missed.

I think I remember reading an article a while back where Dave Sitek (or Tunde,or Kyp?) humourously mentioned that the two best guitar players they knew (Gerard and Jaleel) wound up playing bass and drums respectively.

Is there any evidence of this anywhere? Is there another TVoTR side band along the lines of Rain Machine and Maximum Balloon?

TVoTR's Twitter is back up and running, reporting that the band is back on tour.

I'm so glad they've decided to continue.
