Glee creator apologises to KoLand Slash

Glee’s creator Ryan Murphy has backtracked from his claims that Kings of Leon are “self-centered assholes” and that Slash is “uneducated and quite stupid”.

KoL and Slash won the backing of Dave Grohl – who recently declared that “The Glee guy [is] a fucking jerk” – while Elton John defended Murphy on Late Night With Jimmy Fallon last week by suggesting that the bands should “lighten up” about the karaoke series and that “It’s a compliment when someone records or does one of your songs. It doesn’t matter if it’s a bad version, it’s just a compliment.”

However it now seems that battle is over, with Murphy backtracking in a new interview with Hollywood Reporter. “I didn’t speak with as much clarity as I would have liked,” Murphy explains, “I’ve never felt that if you don’t give Glee your music, there’s something diabolical about you. To the contrary: I support artists and what they choose to do… I think Kings of Leon are cool as shit. The Foo Fighters are brilliant. We’d love to do one if their songs, if they were ever interested. But if it’s not their thing, then OK.”

“Who am I to say ‘Fuck you?’ That’s not what I meant. I completely understand when artists don’t want a show or another artist to interpret their songs. In fact, I respect it. It’s their personal work and I’d feel the same way. We get turned down all the time and I don’t fight it or even go back after a rejection.”

Murphy also revealed that Bjork recently declined to allow the show to use one of her songs: “She read the scene and didn’t think it was the right fit for her song. ‘I told her, ‘That’s completely cool,’ and she said to come back to her down the road. We deal with that every day.”

Sounds like a truce… for now.
