Foo Fighters: “Glee guy [is]a fucking jerk”

Foo Fighters have joined Slash and Kings of Leon in the chorus of musicians attacking Glee creator Ryan Murphy.

The band recently let Deadmau5 tamper with their new single and has licensed music to other teen sensations including Dawson’s Creek, One Tree Hill, Friends, but Dave Grohl is bitter about Murphy slamming stars if they decide not to sign up to a karaoke cover on Glee.

Following the premire of the band’s documentary Back and Forth Grohl told the Hollywood Reporter that “The Glee guy [is] a fucking jerk. Slash was the first one. He wanted to do Guns ‘n’ Roses and Slash is like, ‘I hate fucking musicals. It’s worse than Grease.’ Then [Murphy’s] like, ‘Well, of course he’d say that, he’s a washed up ol’ rock star, that’s what they fucking do.’ And then Kings of Leon say, ‘No, we don’t want to be on your show.’ And then he’s like, ‘Snotty little assholes…’ And it’s just like, Dude, maybe not everyone loves Glee. Me included.”

“You shouldn’t have to do fucking Glee. And then the guy who created Glee is so offended that we’re not, like, begging to be on his fucking show … I watched 10 minutes – It’s not my thing.”

Drummer Taylor Hawkins chipped in with an eloquent “Yeah, fuck that shit” just in case any reporter had missed the point.

if you compare the last 10 years of music to the 90's (or any decade before it) it's no contest...
today's biggest bands are the same ones that were big in the 80's & 90s (rhcp, foo fighters, u2, metallica, radiohead, ratm, tool, green day, blink)
what bands could you possibly say stack up against the ones i've mentioned?
in terms of sales, popularity & the likeliness of being around as long as the bands i aforementioned, coldplay & king of leon (puke..) would be the only two bands that come to mind..
most of the big music festival headliner's (here & abroad) aren't bands that have started in the last ten years...

today's music popularity is dominated by pop artists, most of which are manufactured..
sure, britney started in the late 90's, but her star continually rose throughout the turn of the century.
it's all about the pink's, rihanna's and lady gaga's of today.. and with the success of shows like idol & glee, things will only get worse.
now try telling me that today's music in general isn't in a sad state...

There has always in the history of recorded music, been crappy benign "pop" music.

Pop music doesn't equal bad music.

In 10 years I believe people will be singing the praises of artists like The Strokes, Arctic Monkeys, Bloc Party, Arcade Fire and Kanye West in the same way, it's all about perspective.

there is so much music being put out by so many good musicians at the moment saying the state of music is declining is a ridiculous exaggeration.

taking nothing away from the original release, the reason glee covering it makes it worse is because if people hear the original they'll automatically think of glee! in a perfect world, i'd love to see all cover versions or sampling banned from tv shows, commercials, radio ad's and from other musicians (unless released as a b-side), just to see what these artists/composers could possibly come up with??
and people wonder why today's music is so poor...

I couldn't be bothered going on.

I fail to see how the crap pop stars of today who get to number 1 are any worse than the crap pop stars who went to number 1 in the 90s.

Arguably, many of the 90s bands you mentioned that are massive today are producing the same commercial rubbish as that of other pop stars. Presumably they've realised that it's an easy way to make money.

The other 90s bands you've mentioned were just as commercially irrelevant in the 90s as they are today. Critically acclaimed sure, but I think your memory of where they appeared on music charts (or more accurately, didn't appear) is pretty out of whack.

Some great songs in there. I don't know what you're talking about BH.

I have two points.

1. You're comparing apples and oranges. Wanna see the biggest selling artists of the 90's? Check the wikipedia page on top selling albums of the 90s - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Best-selling_albums_by_year_in_the_United_States#1990s. Or check out the ten best selling artists of the 90's list - http://www.mademan.com/mm/10-best-selling-artists-90s.html See any RHCP, radiohead or tool? No, because as "big" as those bands were/are, they weren't popular mainstream. They were, for want of a better word, "alternate"

So, why compare them to the popular artists of today ie Lady Gaga etc. You should be comparing them to the big alternate artists of today, which to my mind would be Strokes, QOTSA and the like.

2. I dont know why people get so up in arms about what's popular. Popular is a measure of what other people are listening to - why do you care? When I first started listening to music in the 90's, TripleJ was playing lots of music that I liked, so I listened to JJJ a lot. Now they don't, so I don't. I have to put a little more effort in to go and find new music to listen to. And guess what? The Internet? Makes that REALLY FUCKING EASY.

So when someone tells me that music is "bad" or "in trouble", I take that to mean they're too lazy to spend five minutes on the Internet finding bands from anywhere in the entire freaking world that they might like.

both fair points gumbuoy...
though i think i (and some of the other user's posts) may have misled some people with earlier comments by making it sound like album sales were the most important thing in judging the quality and standards of each artist (which clearly it isn't), when making comparisons..

but from my own personal viewpoint i'd much prefer to discover bands that have come before (that i haven't heard of as yet) as opposed to anything coming out today. that's not to say i'd completely avoid listening to any artist releasing music today (that would be stupid), but i just prefer to listen to the older stuff. again, just my opinion/thoughts..
