Trent Reznor wins an Oscar

Future trivia question: What do Martin Scorsese, Gwyneth Paltrow, Three Six Mafia and Trent Reznor have in common?

The Nine Inch Nails leader and his co-composer Atticus Ross have backed up their Golden Globes win by taking out the prize for Best Original Score at the Academy Awards with their soundtrack to The Social Network.

They defeated nominated work from AR Rahman (127 Hours), Hans Zimmer (Inception), John Powell (How to Train Your Dragon) and Alexandre Desplat (The King’s Speech).

he does have an Oscar already, for The Lion King.

But I did prefer the Inception soundtrack to the Social Network one.

his TDKR soundtrack should be fucking amazing...

i don't believe that robbed is the correct word. that score did several things. first and foremost, it really gave that film a level of emotion that would have (i believe) been lost. second, it distinguishes it's self from the others in the sense that when i hear a score from that film, i know it was from that film. zimmers stuff could just as easily be from any classical arrangement and i would almost never know which film it was from. not to say that zimmer is not amazing, because he absolutely is. however, it just seems to me that the reznor/ross score was more distinct and yet at the same time delicate. just my humble opinion.

I can't even remember one piece of music from Social Network, I thought it was a pretty poor year for soundtracks all round.

Also was I the only one who absolutely hated this year's broadcast? The only funny was seeing James Franco high.

yes. in one word. but even deeper than that, i was thinking of what trent reznor had been through in order to get to where he is now. this is a man who struggled with being who and what he was for his whole career only to battle substance abuse like so many others. they difference being, it seems that at a point in his career, he had made a decision to be clean, sober and successful. from that point on, it is almost a cinderella story of finally finding his place in the world as well as finally getting the recognition for the music that he creates and his ability to capture emotion and describe it through music. just a talented guy who also happens t be quite intelligent. i know this sounds like a fan boy b.s. post but i am just sincerely impressed with what he has accomplished and finally been recognized for. really, the last time i remember a score that made an impression like that one [the social network] did was the last of the mohicans. and i still hear that score from time to time randomly. again, just my opinion. ;)

He accepted, I wasn't paying attention to the speech though.

i think it was a fair win, especially considering inception's well known "...burrrrr dundun dundun dundun dundun dundun burrrrrr..." score isn't actually zim. it's mind heist by zack hemsey

Not even! and that's one of my favourite classical pieces, maybe the movie was too wordy - guess I was more focused on the script.

Very deserving win, the soundtrack has been playing in my house pretty much non-stop for 6 months :)

I absolutely adored the soundtrack and thought it was perfect for the film. I also thought it was a fantastic match for Trent to score a film based on social networking, considering he has been using it (like so many other artists) to connect directly with his fans since breaking from the record company.

I feel like my dad just won an oscar.

Inception beating Social Network for this oscar would have been like Robert Downey Jr. in tropic thunder beating Heath Ledger's Joker as best supporting actor.

except that BURRRRRR sound also appears on the Inception soundtrack, so it's entirely possible (and I would think likely, given that movie soundtracks are usually done before trailer soundtracks) that Hemsey borrowed it from Zimmer's soundtrack...
