Fox News loves Radiohead
Thu 24th Feb, 2011 in International News
The notoriously right-wing Fox News has declared Radiohead’s King of Limbs to be “The best album of 2011… nothing else is going to match the smooth electro of Bloom, the electronic naturalism of Morning Mr Magpie, the jarring serenity of Give Up the Ghost, the harsh beauty of Lotus Flower, and the edgy mellowness of Codex. It’s truly the great post-dubstep ambient trance soul record that the world has been waiting for”.
But before we start to ponder what Fox News’ championing of Radiohead might mean for Glen Beck’s New World Order conspiracy theories or wonder if perhaps John Laws, Andrew Bolt and Tony Abbott are performing their own interpretive dances to Lotus Flower it’s worth nothing that Red Eye exists in a Fox News twilight zone.
The show airs at the insomniac friendly time of at 3:00 a.m and offers a bizarre mix of news commentary and interviews with folks like Stephen Malknus, The Melvins and even our favourite extraterrestrial metal band Gwar.
The show’s host Greg Gutfield has used the show to jokingly propose an invasion of Canada and announce plans to open a gay bar at Ground Zero, but he also has also proven himself to be Fox News’ resident musical expert championing Kylesa, Matthew Dear, Black Angels, Ariel Pinks, Mike Patton, Four Tet and our own Tame Impala.
Gutfield described Tame Impala as “an Australian band, a cross between Cream and Dungen, and that’s their only problem: they sound too much like other great bands. But they write such awesome songs, with incredible choruses and melodies – that you know if they avoid overdoses, they will be big rock stars, and turn into massive jerks.”
So, basically the Radiohead ‘review’ is just a late night joke, but it’s undoubtedly the most sensible thing you’ll hear on Fox News all year.
