NME award winners

When the nominations for the NME awards were announced last month it looked as though Foals and Arcade Fire would dominate the event. However both bands fared relatively poorly on the night receiving only one award each from a combined total of nine nominations.

Spanish Sahara earned Foals the Best Track prize, while Arcade Fire continued their recent run of award wins with The Suburbs picking up the Best Album gong following similar wins at the Grammy and Brit awards.

The oh-so-dreamy Matt Bellamy won two awards – taking home the prize for Sexiest Male for the fourth time and leading Muse to the Best British Band award for the second year in a row. Justin Bieber also ‘won’ two prizes, taking out the backhanded Least Stylish and Worst Album ‘awards’.

Performers on the night included Godlike Genius award recipient Dave Grohl and his Foo Fighters, Teenage Cancer Trust Outstanding Contribution To Music award winner PJ Harvey, Best New Band victors Hurts, Best International Band and Best Video winners My Chemical Romance, and the innovative Crystal Castles.

I love Muse (well, I did up until their last album) but this is where these sorts of awards lose me - they didnt have the best track or album, or the best live show, or the best video, so what makes them the best band? I know these things are totally at the subjective whim of the selectors, but a little bit of internal logic wouldn't go astray.

I remember back when NME and Q magazine used to support independant music, I picked up Q the other day and I couldn't tell the difference between it and Smash Hits!
Thank God for Mojo, the only decent music mag on the market these days...

yes definitely. watch a few episodes, other than the pilot and if you dont like it then, you probably wont like it at all.

Hottest man: Matt Bellamy? really? have you seen him up close? I'll admit when I saw their show I was fapping over him in his sequined suit but when I saw pictures of him the next day up close I gagged.

I'd say Misfits is more consistent but when it's not busy being shit Skins does have the odd fantastic moment.

Any awards ceremony that has prizes for "hottest man/woman", "most/least stylish" shouldn't be taken too seriously.

pretty horrible list, but thats not surprising considering its NME... I'm not sure if i should be happy to see Laura Marling getting notice, because i really like her, but i dislike NME

it is astonishing what his amazing voice, piano skills and guitar skills can do to elevate his attractiveness though. I had a massive crush on him for a good 2 hours.

what i was trying to convey dear gumbouy ol chap, was that i thought the foals should have acquired more nme awards. what, with the divine performances all over the globe and the outstanding acceleration in quality of their sophomore album from their debut - "they should have shat it it". also its quiet splendid to see the naked and famous (tnaf) representing new zealand. suffice?
