Metallica’s new album:“not really 100 percent aMetallica”

After two years on the road with the Death Magnetic tour, Metallica will soon return to the studio but guitarist Kirk Hammett has cryptically suggested that they won’t actually be recording a ‘Metallica’ album when they hit the studio in May.
Hammett told Rolling Stone “I don’t want to give too much away, but it’s not really 100 percent a Metallica record. It’s a recording project, let’s put it that way… Without getting too deep into it, it’s more a recording project than a bona fide Metallica album. Whether or not we can pull it off in just two weeks remains to be seen.”
So what exactly is this officially unofficial project? Drummer Lars Ulrich – who is currently being sued by his former assistant – revealed last November that the group hasn’t “really written” since 2006/07, which is hopefully just an inevitable result of the band’s constant touring but does raise the possibility that they’re simply uninspired to write new material. Could an album that’s “not really 100 percent a Metallica” just be stop gap covers set?
