The Strokes release new song

Earlier this morning The Strokes made their new song Under The Cover Of Darkness available for free download from their website. It’s the first single from forthcoming album Angles and the first we have heard from the band in over five years – so, what of it?

As much as you try, it is hard to listen to a new Strokes song with fresh ears. Casablancas and co presided over a garage rock revolution in the early 2000s, as their songs Last Night and New York City Cops fast became anthems for a generation of kids bored with hyper-colour t-shirts and boy bands.

With this is mind, Under The Cover may just be the perfect return for New York City’s finest.

Under The Cover Of Darkness sounds oddly familiar, and with its jaunty guitar and sauntering chorus wouldn’t sound out of place on their 2001 debut Is This It. However, this is Strokes for a new generation and the band has gone out of their way to prove that over the course of a decade they have learnt a few new tricks. The song is much rougher than the high-gloss sounds of last album First Impressions Of Earth , yet allows the band to show off their new found skills with a few tricky key changes and rumbling guitar solos.

Casablancas may sing on Under The Cover Of Darkness, “I’ve been all around this town…Everybody’s been singing the same song for 10 years”, but he has no intention of letting history repeat.

What do you think of the Under The Cover Of Darkenss ?
