NME has announced that rocker Dave Grohl will be crowned Godlike Genius at the Showckwaves NME Awards ceremony next month in London.
With Grohl picking up a guitar at twelve years old and dropping out of school to join his first band at just seventeen, NME is celebrating his long list of achievements that he has been accumulating ever since. While Nirvana and Foo Fighters stand as his greatest works, NME also claim Grohl to be “one of rock’s great collaborators, with a musical CV to die for”. He has banded together with the likes of Them Crooked Vultures, Scream, Queens Of The Stone Age, Tenacious D, Nine Inch Nails and The Prodigy.
Upon being told that he will be receiving the award, Grohl is as humble as ever, saying “I don’t think I’m godlike or a genius, I kind of think I’m just a fucking idiot most of the time. It’s flattering. It’s a nice thing to be acknowledged for doing something you love to do, but in truth I don’t consider it a body of work because I don’t consider it work.”
Not all award recipients are so unassuming, with last years winner Paul Weller claiming in his acceptance speech, “I’m embarrassed because people said so many nice things about me… but they’re all true”. Humble or not, other past winners include New Order, Manic Street Preachers, The Cure, The Clash and Primal Scream.
