First acts announced for SXSW

The first group of acts and discussion topics for the 25th Anniversary of the SXSW Music and Media Conference has been revealed.

On the live front the festival’s lineup includes plenty of bands that sound suspiciously like new lo-fi/chillwave groups including Small Black, Babe Rainbow, Chapel Club, Clock Opera, Designer Drugs, Light Pollution, Cloud Nothings, Nite Jewel, Mustard Pimp, Small Black and Wild Flag and a fleet of Antipodean acts lead by Art vs Science, The Holidays, The Jezabels, Kids of 88, The Swiss, The Naked and Famous and Miami Horror.

In 2010 festival hosted 1,978 acts representing from 49 different countries across 89 venues in downtown Austin. Over 13,000 punters attended the festival’s six days of gigs , industry discussions, demo listening sessions, trade show exhibits and panels.

Some of the intriguing topics for panel discussions in 2011 will include ‘Are Metalheads Smart Enough to Be Online?’, ‘I’m Not Old, Your Music Does Suck’, ‘What to Do When Your Artist is Addicted’ and ‘Play Ball: The Art Of Pitching Music’.

isnt the whole point of SXSW that 2/3rds of the bands are unknown, and the other 1/3rd are superstars who play secret shows that dont get announced anyway?

Yeah, it's basically a massive version of Big Sound.


They don't really have huge headline acts. The aim is to group the smaller acts with some well-known acts that would have a similar audience.


When you consider that, it's a fairly decent line-up.

and if i were going, and deity-willing, one year i will, id make it my mission not to see any band id already seen, unless of course it was SFK.

I'm pretty sure the first time The White Stripes were there they played in a car park behind a bar or something. I'd probably see something like that.

You do get the opportunity to see some bands in venues much smaller than they'd ever play elsewhere. I think some of those would be too much of a drawcard to resist.
