Sony walks away from theWalkman
Mon 25th Oct, 2010 in International News
Though it might be a shock to hear that Sony is still making new Walkmen tape players, the company has now announced that it will stop production of the low-cost portable stereos in April next year, due to an unsurprising lack of sales. The announcement coincided with the ninth anniversary of the iPod.
Sony has sold over 220 million Walkman players since they first went on sale in Japan on July 1st 1979, but following the decision by the company to cease production on floppy discs in September last year the Walkman’s days were numbered.
Although Pitchfork even started a sister site earlier this year to focus on cassette-only releases there simply aren’t enough hipsters in the world to support the outdated technology.
