Weezer promises to break up
Thu 7th Oct, 2010 in International News
Weezer drummer Patrick Wilson has offered to end the band’s faltering career, writing on Twitter that “If they can make it $20[million] We’ll do the ‘deluxe breakup’”.
The comment comes in response to an online petition calling on the band the suffering for long term fans of the band.
The campaign’s organiser James Burns explains that “Every year, Rivers Cuomo swears that he’s changed, and that their new album is the best thing that he’s done since Pinkerton, and what happens? Another pile of crap like Beverly Hills or I’m Your Daddy.”
“This is an abusive relationship, and it needs to stop now. I am tired of my friends being disappointed year after year. I am tired of endless whimsical cutesy album covers and music videos.”
As Burns helpfully points out: “If all 852,000 of you (really?) who bought Pinkerton pitch in $12, we will meet our goal.”
For his troubles Burns has received death threats and messages from disgruntled Weezer fans wishing that Burns would get AIDS. “I wish more of Weezer’s fans would have the same sense of humor,” he told the New York Times. “Quite honestly, I’m not expecting to raise the whole 10 million,” he said. “I’m not really expecting it to happen. I would be thrilled if it got up to like 10,000.”
The petition is still $9,999,794 shy of the $10 million target, so it looks like Weezer will still be around for a while yet – hey maybe they’ll stay together long enough to bring the Pinkerton tour to Australia.
In related news FasterLouder will also happily stop running news about Weezer for a payment of a mere $10 million dollars.
