The best bass player of alltime?

Dream Theater’s John Myung has been declared the ‘Best Bassist of All time’ with a massive 42 percent of the votes in a poll conducted by MusicRadar.com.

Nearly 11,000 people voted for Myung, who beat Cliff Burton (Metallica), Steve Harris (Iron Maiden), Paul Gray (Slipknot) and Geddy Lee (Rush), for the top spot. The only woman to make the list was famed Wrecking Crew session bassist Carol Kaye who has played on an estimated 10,000 recording sessions.

Taken in conjunction with Rhythm Magazine’s recent list of the 25 best drummers of the last 25 years the greatest rhythm sections in modern music belong to Dream Theater, Rush, Slipknot, Iron Maiden, Them Crooked Vultures and Red Hot Chilli Peppers.

In an interview to mark the win, Myung humbly noted that “in no way [do I] feel that it’s true in the sense of the title of the award, because there’s so many great players all over the world who contribute amazing music. So, even though I’m deeply flattered and appreciative, let’s say that it’s taken with a bit of objectivity.”

He also commented on the recent departure of Mike Portnoy from Dream Theater : “I can’t say I saw it coming. And of course, nobody likes conflict. Dream Theater works best as a creative unit, and it’s not going to be easy to find a replacement and have somebody we can really bond with. I’d say the general band vibe is positive. We’re looking for the right guy, and I’m sure we’ll find that person.”

thankyou for your open minded input.

metal is not really clogging up this poll, popular metal is. i honestly feel that metal bassists are some of the best players around but not all of the metal bassists on here deserve to be.

the list seems to be half jazz/funk style session bassists and half mainstream metal players.

alex webster from cannibal corpse has more chops than a butchers shop, he plays every single part of his bass, he plays finger style a la billy sheehan, he writes the majority of the songs in the band and his tone is crystal clear and cuts right through the sludgey mix of his death metal bandmates. if this list was voted for by serious metal musicians he would surely be up there

i think that of the people who voted for this, half were actual bassists who know what they're talking about and the other half were music fans who just voted for their favourite band regardless of who the bass player is/was.

seconded x 1,000,000. musicians should only really vote in these 'who's the best' style things, simply because they actually know what the fuck is going on in the playing and skills department. but these things in general are a bit of a joke - what really makes someone the best? technique? speed? stage presence? influence on others? it's so open to anyone's personal opinion. i remember reading an interview with steve vai saying that he much prefers it when people say to him that he's their favourite guitarist, as opposed to 'the best' - i think that's how it should be, not some sort of contest.
