Mani really hates Peter Hook

Looks like there’s some serious trouble in bassist’s paradise currently, as over the weekend two UK legends and clearly now former mates got into a public mud-slinging tussle.

The man doing basically all of the slinging was none other than Mani of seminal crossover groups The Stone Roses and Primal Scream, who took to Twitter to decimate Peter Hook, he of Joy Division and New Order fame – and fake DJing infamy of course.

“3 things visible from space, great wall of china, peter hooks wallet stuffed with ian Curtis blood money, man citys empty trophy cabinet [sic],” began Mani’s online rant, of course referring to Hooky’s latest venture involving a Joy Division tribute tour, which is coincidentally enough set to hit Australia this month

Mani didn’t stop there though, with the Primals bassist rattling off a shopping-list of grievances with Hook over Twitter.

“used to adore the man, now he’s a self centred sellout reduced to hawking his mates corpse around to get paid. And he can’t play…either personally or professionally. ever wondered why im universally loved, and another manc ex legend in his own mind is despised by most…we were all laughing behind his back watching the stupid wank struggle to do the same old shit he’s done for the last 30 years!! [sic]”

It’s a pretty jarring attack against Hooky, made all the more shocking considering that both were a part of the bass-lovin’ supergroup Freebass with former Smiths member Andy Rourke. Mani promptly shat all over that body of work too, saying that Freebass was where it belonged and “in the fucking bargain bin before it’s even released”. Ouch.

A press release from Hook’s team as to the current status of Freebass seemed to confirm the group’s dissolution, however saying that the band’s record, It’s A Beautiful Life, will indeed crawl out of that bargain bin and reach fans.

“Freebass, is no longer a functioning group…Recent events have made Freebass entirely unviable as a band, and with this in mind, it has been decided that the project should be shelved, rather than placed on hiatus while members pursue their other interests. No third parties were involved or harmed in the break up.”
