Vinyl’s dead

A UK company And Vinyly, founded by Jason Leach, who co-founded the techno group and record label Subhead in the 1990s, has opened a service to press cremated ashes in vinyl records.

Leach, who also runs the Death to Vinyl label, explained to Wired that he was inspired to found the business after watching a news report which showed someone in America putting ashes into fireworks. As Leach explains “It’s a bit more interesting than being in a pot on a shelf.”

The basic package costs £2,000 and includes up to 30 ash-flecked discs with whatever sounds you choose, lasting a maximum of 24 minutes. For an additional £1,000 you can have your album stocked on the shelves of ‘reputable vinal stores worldwide’ or for an extra £10,000 punters can live it up with the FUNeral package where an experienced team of event organisers will play your record ‘speak to your guests, crack some jokes, embarrass someone or just make them dance.’

Leach says that the main challenge is choosing the music: “It’s difficult to think of what to put on your record because you want it to be the best album you can imagine.”
